How New Philadelphia began
New Philadelphia was founded in 1804 by John Knisely, a Pennsylvania settler who returned to the Tuscarawas Valley with his family and 33 other pioneers, looking for country where game was more plentiful. Surveyor John Wells laid the town out on a grid modeled deliberately on Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, giving it its name and its main streets, High Avenue and Broadway. It sits a few miles from the site of Schoenbrunn, the Moravian mission to the Delaware (Lenape) founded by David Zeisberger in 1772 and abandoned in 1777, and became the Tuscarawas County seat when the county organized in 1808. By 1833 it held county buildings, a printing office, stores and taverns, and its economy grew through the 19th and 20th centuries on coal, clay, and steel; it remains the county seat today, anchored by the 1882 Tuscarawas County Courthouse.
Settled 1804, platted 1804, incorporated February 12, 1833, by John Knisely, with his family and 33 other pioneers; town surveyed by John Wells.
Where the name comes from
The town was named for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the city many of its founding families had left. Surveyor John Wells laid it out on a grid mirroring Philadelphia's plan, with High Avenue and Broadway as its principal streets, reinforcing the namesake.
Before the town
No Native village, mound, or treaty line specific to the ground New Philadelphia now occupies is documented in the sources consulted; for the pre-contact and 18th-century Native history of the surrounding Tuscarawas Valley. The one directly connected site is Schoenbrunn, the Moravian mission to the Delaware (Lenape) that David Zeisberger founded on May 3, 1772 on the east bank of the Tuscarawas River, a few miles from where New Philadelphia would later be platted; it held Ohio's first Christian church and schoolhouse and a written civil code agreed to by its Delaware residents, and grew to about 60 dwellings and over 300 people before it was abandoned in 1777 as Revolutionary War pressures made the mission's neutral position untenable. The site is preserved today as Schoenbrunn Village, a state memorial administered by the Ohio History Connection, and is commemorated within the Commons category documenting the Moravian mission and the Lenape and Mohican people who lived there.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Christian Munsee and Mahican (Moravian converts).

Stories
A town named for Philadelphia
John Knisely, a Pennsylvanian, wanted to settle where game was more plentiful, and he found that country in the Tuscarawas Valley. In 1804 he returned with his own family and thirty-three other pioneers; in January 1808 he bought the 3,554-acre tract beneath the town from Godfrey Haga, in a deal handled by Haga's agent, the Moravian missionary John Heckewelder. Knisely had surveyor John Wells lay the new town out on a grid modeled deliberately on the city of Philadelphia, right down to naming its main streets High Avenue and Broadway, and the name New Philadelphia followed naturally from the plan. When Tuscarawas County organized in 1808 and the state sent commissioners to choose a seat, Knisely's young town beat out its rivals, and it has been the county seat ever since.
From taverns to a courthouse dome
By 1833, when New Philadelphia incorporated, the frontier plat Knisely had laid out three decades earlier already had the look of a real county seat: county buildings, a printing office, several stores, and five taverns for travelers on the roads and, later, the Ohio and Erie Canal. The town's economy shifted through the 19th century toward coal and clay, and its factories eventually turned out steel, sewer pipe, roofing tile, bricks, stovepipes, carriages, flour, brooms, vacuum cleaners, and enameled goods. The civic centerpiece of that growth still stands: the Tuscarawas County Courthouse, a Classical Revival building at 125 East High Avenue built by Thomas Boyd in 1882, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, expanded in 1990, and topped by a copper dome restored in 2018.

48,408 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address.
