How Westfield Township, Medina County began
Westfield Township, a perfect square of twenty-five square miles on the southern edge of the Western Reserve, was organized in 1820. According to the 1881 county history it takes its name from Westfield, Massachusetts, the home of James Fowler, who owned about two-thirds of its land east of Campbell's Creek; Henry Thorndyke of Portage County owned the rest. Hanmer Palmer and Eber Mallory became its first permanent settlers on April 2, 1817. In 1826 Fowler laid out the village at the township center around a four-acre public square, known as Le Roy and now Westfield Center, and in 1848 the Ohio Farmers' Insurance Company, ancestor of Westfield Insurance, was chartered there. The township had 2,632 residents in 2020.
Incorporated 1820, by earliest settlers, naming the township for their home community of Westfield, Massachusetts.
Where the name comes from
The 1881 county history says the township was named for Westfield, Massachusetts, because James Fowler of Westfield, Mass., owned two-thirds of its land and lived there, 'whose prominence as landed proprietor, coupled with his residence in the eastern Westfield, gave name to the new township'. It was not named by the first settlers, who came in 1817 and after.
Before the town
The 1881 county history says that when the nineteenth century began, the banks of Campbell's Creek were 'the chosen abode of a large band of Indians belonging to the Wolf tribe', who made the creek's shores their center, roamed over the surrounding country on trails through the forest, and took a favorite trip to Chippewa Lake. The 'Wolf tribe' is the county historian's term and no nation is named in modern terms. No mound or village site is recorded in the sources checked. The land was opened to settlement by the Treaty of Fort Industry (1805). Elsewhere in the county, a Potawatomi encounter is recorded in Liverpool Township in 1810.

Stories
A Massachusetts Name for a Township of Farms
When Westfield Township's earliest settlers organized their local government in 1820, they reached back to their own point of origin rather than inventing something new, naming the township for Westfield, Massachusetts. It was a modest choice for what would become, by the late 20th century, home to one of Medina County's most significant employers: an insurance company chartered in the township in 1848 to serve farm property exclusively grew, over more than a century, into the Westfield Group, and by 2017 stood as the largest employer in the entire county, with billions of dollars in assets and a network of more than a thousand independent agents. The township's own governing seat took an odd detour along the way -- known for decades by the postal name Le Roy rather than Westfield -- before a 1971 referendum, passing with 93 percent approval, finally brought the village's name back in line with the township and the company that had grown up around it.
The first tree on Campbell's Creek
In 1816 two men from the Reserve, James Chapman and Warren Brainard, walked west to look over the land along Campbell's Creek for friends waiting down East. They camped for a night on the spot where a farmhouse later stood. In the early morning, while Brainard got breakfast, Chapman made the forest ring with his ax and felled the first tree cut by white men in what became Westfield Township. Their short inspection convinced them the land west of the creek was a goodly heritage, and on the way home through Portage County they met Eber Mallory and Hanmer Palmer, who had meant to settle near the center of Ohio and changed their plans. After Chapman, Brainard, Mallory, Palmer and Wells went with the proprietor Henry Thorndyke, who owned the land but had never seen it, to select their lots on the creek's west bank, and on April 2, 1817 Palmer and Mallory returned with their families as the first settlers. By 1868, the county history notes, all but three of those pilgrims of 1817 had died.
