How Miamisburg began

Miamisburg grew up on the west bank of the Great Miami River where Zechariah Hole, a Virginia settler, built a stockade called Hole's Station around 1797. Four Pennsylvania proprietors — Emanuel Gebhart, Jacob Kercher, Dr. John Treon and Dr. Peter Treon — laid out and auctioned lots for the new town of Miamisburg on February 20, 1818; it took its name from the Miami people, combined with the German/English suffix 'burg' for town. The Miami and Erie Canal reached the town in 1827-29 and drove early commerce, and the settlement was incorporated as a village in 1832, later becoming a city. The Adena-built Miamisburg Mound, the largest conical burial mound in the eastern United States, has stood on a ridge above the river since well before European settlement and remains the city's best-known landmark; in the 20th century the nearby Mound nuclear weapons plant (1947-2003) gave the city an unusual role in the atomic age.

Settled c. 1797, platted 1818-02-20, incorporated 1832, by Emanuel Gebhart, Jacob Kercher, Dr. John Treon and Dr. Peter Treon platted the town; Zechariah Hole was the first settler at the site.

Where the name comes from

The town was named Miamisburg for the Miami (Myaamia) people of the Great Miami River valley, combined with '-burg' (town/borough). Before platting, the settlement was known informally as Hole's Station, after first settler Zechariah Hole, and sometimes as Gebhart's, after an early hotel keeper.

Before the town

The Miamisburg Mound, a large conical earthwork on a ridge above the Great Miami River, was built by people of the Adena culture between roughly 800 BC and AD 100, in several construction stages; an 1869 excavation found burials, ceremonial goods, and a layer of flat stones near the base. At 65 feet high and about 800 feet in circumference it is one of the two largest conical mounds in the eastern United States and one of roughly 1,000 surviving mounds out of an estimated 10,000 that once stood in the central Ohio Valley. In the historic period the Great Miami River valley was Myaamia (Miami) territory; the Myaamia migrated into western Ohio from Wisconsin in the early 1700s and held villages throughout the Great Miami and Maumee valleys, with their principal town at Pickawillany near present-day Piqua. No specific historic-era village or trail site within present Miamisburg itself is documented; the Treaty of Greenville (1795), which opened most of the Great Miami valley to settlement, predates Miamisburg's founding by two years and covers the land on which the town was later platted.

Stories

The mound that named a nuclear plant

In 1920 industrialist and inventor Charles F. Kettering, a Dayton native, bought the Miamisburg Mound and turned the 65-foot Adena earthwork into a public park with a stairway to its summit. Nine years later he transferred the property to the Ohio Historical Society, and it has been a state historic site ever since. In 1947 the federal government opened a new nuclear-weapons component plant on a 306-acre site nearby and named it Mound Laboratory after the ancient landmark across the road. For nearly fifty years, until production ended in 1993, Mound workers manufactured plutonium-initiator parts for the U.S. nuclear arsenal a short walk from a 2,000-year-old burial mound; the plant's cleanup and redevelopment continued for years afterward, and the site is now used for regional emergency dispatch and law enforcement offices.

The 1986 derailment and the largest train evacuation in U.S. history

On the night of July 8, 1986, a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad train derailed in Miamisburg. Tank cars carrying hazardous chemicals ruptured and ignited, sending explosions and toxic smoke over the city. Emergency officials ordered a mass evacuation that, by later estimates, moved somewhere between 25,000 and 40,000 residents out of the area — described as the largest evacuation ever triggered by a single train accident in the United States. The fire and chemical release kept much of the city closed for days while crews worked the wreck.

Digging into the mound, 1869

In 1869, more than a generation before Ohio archaeology had settled methods, diggers opened a shaft into the Miamisburg Mound. Twenty-four feet down they struck a layer of flat stones laid overlapping like roof shingles, evidence that the Adena builders had faced part of the interior in stone as they raised the mound in stages. Deeper still were skeletons bedded in clay and charcoal, together with carved pipes and small animal effigies left as grave goods. The excavation was one of the pieces of evidence used to attribute the mound to the Adena culture, which built conical burial mounds across the Ohio Valley between about 800 BC and AD 100.

48,876 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
