How Vernon Township, Scioto County began
Vernon Township, established in 1818 in southeastern Scioto County and, according to Wikipedia, named for George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, built its early economy on iron: by 1833 it ran a blast steam furnace alongside a gristmill, sawmill, three stores and a tanyard. That furnace was Clinton Furnace, built in 1832 and closed in 1873; the Irish immigrant George Crawford (1819-1903) was one of its owners, and the settlement around it took the name Crawford. No incorporated town stands in the township today. Its 2020 population was 1,891.
Settled before 1817 (Pine Creek Valley; Chaffin's Mill), incorporated 1818 (from Upper Township), by first settlers Shadrach Chaffin, David Salladay, Reuben Chaffin, Nathan Searl, Reuben Smith and others.
Where the name comes from
Named after Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia estate, according to Wikipedia; the 1903 county history does not confirm it.

Stories
An Irish immigrant's furnace
Clinton Furnace was built in 1832 on Pine Creek in Vernon Township, and the settlement around it was called Crawford after the Irish immigrant George Crawford (1819-1903), one of its owners. Four brothers of Crawford's wife, Mary Glidden, bought the furnace in 1848; George and Mary moved there in 1851, and in 1867 Crawford bought it and later sold it to William J. Bell, who had been brought in as a partner. The old Clinton Furnace Company started the township's first store in 1832, according to the 1903 county history. The furnace closed in 1873. Only a few graves in the Crawford Cemetery, on private land, are known there now.
Chaffin's Mill
John Shope built the first mill in Vernon Township in 1816 on Pine Creek, and it is still standing in 1903. It passed through Henry Summer in 1819, Thomas Burke in 1820 and Timothy Hayward in 1823 to Reuben Chaffin in 1830, who kept it thirty-three years, hence the name Chaffin's Mill. Near it Amazah Welcher taught the first school before 1817 in a log house with slab seats, puncheon floors and greased-paper windows. Around the mill gathered the Chaffins and Cadots of the French Grant and the Pine Creek valley's other pioneers, and later three Free Will Baptist churches, including Chaffin's Mills Antioch Chapel, were organized nearby; the Clinton Furnace Company opened the township's first store in 1832.
