How Porter Township, Scioto County began

Porter Township, on the Ohio River just west of Portsmouth, was among Scioto County's earliest-settled areas, with pioneers arriving by February 1796; it was formally organized by Samuel Marshall on December 16, 1814, and named for early settler Porter Wheeler. By 1833 it held 21 iron forges along with gristmills, sawmills, a fulling mill and an oil mill. Its largest community, Wheelersburg, was platted in 1824 as Concord and later renamed for Wheeler; the township's other early settlements, including one called simply Porter and the river landing of Basham, have vanished, the latter absorbed when New Boston was platted in 1891. The township's population, over 9,800 at the 2020 census, is concentrated at Wheelersburg and Sciotodale, with its western edge annexed piecemeal by Portsmouth and New Boston.

Settled February 1796, incorporated 1814-12-16 (township organized by Samuel Marshall), by Samuel Marshall; named for early settler Porter Wheeler.

Where the name comes from

Named for Porter Wheeler, an early settler; Wheelersburg, the township's main community, carries his surname directly.

Before the town

No Native site or event specific to Porter Township was found in the sources consulted. The township lies along the Ohio River immediately west of the Portsmouth Earthworks and the Lower Shawneetown site, and would have been within easy reach of both, but no source found ties a named site to this ground specifically.

Stories

The 1968 Wheelersburg tornado

Wheelersburg had grown for more than a century as a quiet river-road community, renamed sometime after its 1824 platting from Concord to honor pioneer Porter Wheeler, when an F5 tornado tore through the town. The storm killed seven people, injured 75 more, and destroyed roughly 550 homes, arriving with hail the size of golfballs and baseballs and doing an estimated two to five million dollars in damage — a catastrophic sum for a town of a few thousand people in 1968. It remains the single most destructive event in the township's recorded history, and Wheelersburg rebuilt to become, by the 2020 census, Porter Township's population center with more than 6,500 residents.
