How Knox Township, Vinton County began

Knox Township, in the east of Vinton County, was formed on December 2, 1850, from two tiers of sections of Lee Township, Athens County, and two of the old Brown Township, on a petition from David T. Benjamin and forty others. Wikipedia says it was named for General Henry Knox. Settled along Raccoon Creek by families like the Vaughns and Quicks, it was a rugged farm township with coal and iron unworked, two pioneer mills (Foster's, 1830, and Bolen's, about 1845), and a reputation for very large families. Population rose from 476 in 1860 to 947 in 1880 and was 541 in 2020.

Stories

108 descendants and a father of twenty-eight

Knox Township's own 1883 chronicler singled out the place for one distinction: its record for large families. An old man still living in the township was the father of twenty-eight children, and an old lady had 108 descendants counting children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Moses Quick, one of the earliest settlers, born in 1803, raised seventeen children there. Coal and iron were known to lie in the hills but not worked beyond a few local coal banks in the northeast, and the township's roughness, bluffs above Raccoon Creek with only a narrow bottom, left families to make what they could of it.

Two mills on one creek

Knox Township's two pioneer mills stood on Raccoon Creek a few sections apart. The Foster Mills, a combined grist and sawmill, went up in 1830 and were thoroughly rebuilt in 1872 as a three-story, 40-by-50-foot frame building, still turning two sets of burrs and a saw by water power. William Bolen's mill followed about 1845; he ran his two-story frame mill, with two sets of burrs and a sawmill, for over twenty years before selling to Robert Skelly in 1868, and put in a steam engine for times when the creek ran too low. The Bolen post office, the township's only one, took its name from the mill.
