How Sheffield began
Sheffield was settled by New England families in 1815 as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, in the township that became in 1824 the first organized in Lorain County. The village itself formed after a 1933 vote by the northern and southern parts of Sheffield Lake to separate; Wikipedia gives 1817 as its date of establishment. It stayed small, with 733 people in 1940, until suburban growth after 2000 lifted it to 4,135 in 2020. The baseball pitcher Lee Richmond, credited with the first perfect game in the major leagues, was born here.
Settled 13 November 1815 (Capt. Joshua Smith and son Douglas, in the township), incorporated 1933 (separated from the village of Sheffield Lake by vote), by Capt. Joshua Smith.
Where the name comes from
Sheffield is the township's name, brought by Capt. Jabez Burrell and Capt. John Day, who bought the township in January 1815 and came from Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts; the Sheffield Lake city website also says many early settlers came from Sheffield, Massachusetts.

Stories
A bear, a boy and an elm
The Sheffield story that every schoolchild once knew, if the 1879 county history is right, is the one about Peter Miller and the bear. Miller, seventeen, was walking home to his father's farm in Avon through the woods when a she-bear with cubs came at him. He shinned up a small elm; she followed; he kicked her down, and she climbed again, and a third time, until both fell together. He escaped with his feet torn up and no shoes, and the neighbors never found the bear. William Day told it in an address, and the historian added that it appeared in McGuffey's readers.
The township that kept splitting
Sheffield began as one big township, and then pieces left. In 1894 Lorain annexed land west of the Black River, including the site of the Johnson Steel Company. In 1920 residents east of the river voted to leave and form the village of Sheffield Lake. In 1933 the northern and southern parts of the village voted to separate, and the south became Sheffield Village. The county's first-organized township was now shared among the city of Lorain, the city of Sheffield Lake, the village of Sheffield and a 2.42-square-mile unincorporated remainder.
