How Sheffield Lake began

Sheffield Lake is the lakeshore part of Sheffield Township, settled from 1815. Farming and the summer resort trade were its economy from the Lake Breeze hotel of 1873 until the end of World War II. Residents east of the Black River voted in 1920 to leave the township and form the village of Sheffield Lake, and in 1933 the village's north and south voted to separate, the south becoming Sheffield Village. A postwar boom multiplied the population about tenfold, from 1,099 in 1940 to 10,484 in 1980; it was 8,957 in 2020. The city is also home to the museum of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Settled 1815 (Sheffield Township), incorporated 1920 (village); later a city, by Township residents east of the Black River.

Where the name comes from

Sheffield Lake takes the Sheffield name from the township, brought by Capt. Jabez Burrell and Capt. John Day of Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts; the city website also says many early settlers came from Sheffield, Massachusetts. 'Lake' marks the shore community that left the township in 1920.

Stories

The Brookside bus

On 23 October 1924 a bus carrying 35 first and second graders from the Brookside school was crossing the Lake Shore Electric tracks at Bennett Road, now Abbe Road, when a limited train struck it. Four children were killed and sixteen injured. The Sheffield Board of Education responded by requiring an older student to ride each bus and get out at railroad crossings to look and listen; the rule lasted about fifty years. The interurban itself was gone before the housing boom that filled the shore with houses after the war.

A township that split itself three ways

Sheffield Lake was never meant to be its own place. It began as the lakeshore portion of the township settled in 1815 and organized in 1824. Farming and resorts, among them the Lake Breeze House and Cleveland Beach with its dance hall, carried it until the Second World War. In 1920 residents east of the Black River voted to separate and form the village of Sheffield Lake. Thirteen years later, in 1933, the residents of the village's northern and southern parts voted to separate, creating Sheffield Village. The village's own population then climbed from 1,099 in 1940 to 6,884 in 1960 as the cottages became year-round houses.

56,915 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
