How Elyria began

Elyria was founded in March 1817 when Heman Ely built a log house, dam, gristmill, and sawmill at the confluence of the east and west branches of the Black River, then part of Huron County. Ely gave the settlement a name blending his own surname with Illyria, the ancient Greek and Roman name for the western Balkans, and later chose the name Lorain for the county that formed around it in 1822-24, with Elyria as county seat. The falls where the two branches meet became Cascade Park, a scenic landmark, while the town itself grew from 168 residents in 1830 to a peak of 53,427 in 1970. Downtown decline followed the 1967 opening of the Midway Mall, part of the broader Rust Belt contraction of the 1970s-80s, though Elyria remains the county's second-largest city and seat of its courts.

Where the name comes from

Elyria combines founder Heman Ely's surname with 'Illyria,' the ancient Greek and Roman name for the region of the western Balkans -- a classically educated founder's flourish on his own name, common in early-19th-century American town-naming.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Elyria is documented in the sources consulted. The city sits at the confluence of the east and west branches of the Black River, a waterway known to French traders under other names in the 1700s, but no dated Native settlement at this particular confluence is recorded. When Heman Ely arrived in 1817 the site was still part of Huron County, within the Connecticut Western Reserve whose Native title west of the Cuyahoga River had been extinguished by the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry.

Stories

A founder's name grafted onto a Balkan word

In March 1817, Heman Ely stood at the point where the east and west branches of the Black River come together and decided to build there: a log house first, then a dam, a gristmill, and a sawmill, the basic machinery any new settlement needed to survive. He was building on land still legally part of Huron County, in the Connecticut Western Reserve, years before Lorain County existed to give the town its future seat of government. For a name, Ely reached for something more literary than a simple surname town -- he fused his own name with 'Illyria,' the old Greek and Roman name for the western Balkans, producing Elyria. When the surrounding county organized a few years later, Ely was on hand again to help choose its name too, picking 'Lorain,' for the France-Germany borderland, over a rival proposal to call it Colerain. The falls where his original mill sat became Cascade Park, still one of the city's scenic landmarks.
