How Salem began

Salem was platted in 1806 by Zadok Street, a clockmaker from Salem, New Jersey, and John Straughan, a Pennsylvania potter, on land settled heavily by Quakers whose faith shaped the town for generations. By the 1840s and 1850s it had become one of Ohio's most committed antislavery towns, publishing the Anti-Slavery Bugle and hosting the state's first statewide Women's Rights Convention in 1850, and its Quaker-rooted manufacturing base later built machinery, pumps and steel products under names like Buckeye Engine and Deming Pump. Painter Charles Burchfield spent his formative years here, and radio disc jockey Alan Freed, credited with popularizing the phrase 'rock and roll,' was born in the city. Salem today is Columbiana County's second-largest city, its downtown still centered on the plat Street and Straughan laid out over two centuries ago.

Where the name comes from

Named Salem for Zadok Street's hometown of Salem, New Jersey; that name itself derives from the Hebrew 'shalom'/the biblical Jerusalem, meaning roughly 'city of peace' -- a name early settlers, many of them Quakers, took seriously enough that it shaped the town's later reputation for reform activism.

Before the town

No source reviewed names a specific Native American village, camp or burial site within present Salem's boundaries at the level of a confirmed, independently sourced location. One summary of Columbiana County's Wikipedia article states that a Wyandot encampment stood at the site later platted as Salem, but we could not confirm this in a second, independent source, so it is not established. The town was platted in 1806, a decade after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville and the earlier 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh had ceded this part of eastern Ohio and opened it to the Seven Ranges survey; by the time of Salem's founding, organized Native settlement in the immediate area had already given way to the wave of Quaker and other settlers who built the town. The Yellow Creek massacre and the Mingo leader Logan are both associated with a different part of the county.

Stories

A city of peace becomes a city of reform

Salem's Quaker founders named their new town for the Hebrew word for peace, and for two generations the town lived up to it in an activist register rather than a quiet one. The Anti-Slavery Bugle, published there from 1845 to 1861, argued 'No Union with Slaveholders' under a roster of editors that included Marius Robinson and Benjamin Jones, and printed some of the era's most important reform writing, including an early Frances Harper poem and one of Sojourner Truth's speeches; its readership stretched into Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin. Houses like the Daniel Howell Hise House and the John Street House operated as Underground Railroad stations, sheltering people escaping slavery on their way further north or into Canada. In April 1850 that same reform current produced Ohio's first statewide Women's Rights Convention, held in Salem with every office of the meeting -- unusually for the period -- held by a woman.

The house that shaped an American painter

Charles Burchfield was five years old when his widowed mother brought the family to Salem, and he lived in the modest house at 867 East Fourth Street through his childhood and into his twenties. During a stretch of 1915 to 1917, working odd jobs and painting obsessively in his spare time, Burchfield produced roughly half of everything he would create in his lifetime -- watercolors of overgrown yards, small-town streets and what he called 'the psychological moods of nature' that would later hang in the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Whitney. A Cleveland Museum of Art curator has called the Salem house 'the most important house in American art history.' It now operates as the Burchfield Homestead, a small museum run to preserve both the building and the record of the years that made him.
