Life story

Charles Burchfield was born at Ashtabula Harbor in 1893 and raised in Salem by his widowed mother. He lived in the Salem house from age five to 28; it is now a museum.

He graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1916, studying under Henry Keller, and developed a personal watercolour style that year.

After army camouflage work in 1918 he moved to Buffalo, designing wallpaper from 1921 and painting full time from 1928. Life magazine named him one of America's ten greatest painters in 1936.

He lived in West Seneca, New York, until his death in 1967.
