How Parral began
Parral is a small village in Dover Township, Tuscarawas County, laid out in 1900 and named for the city of Parral in Chihuahua, Mexico. A post office under the Parral name operated from 1902 to 1915. Its population has hovered close to its founding-era level for over a century, peaking at 271 in 1970 and standing at 205 in 2020.
Platted 1900.
Where the name comes from
Named after Parral, a city in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
Before the town
No Native site at Parral is recorded. The 1884 county history says that the Moravian Indians of Goshen, only eight or ten miles from the Dover Township pioneers it describes, were frequent and familiar visitors to pioneer cabins and often brought wild honey and venison, and that local pioneers made maple sugar in Sugar Creek's groves as their Indian predecessors had; it also names individual Indians, 'Little John' and Philip Konochie, as accused thieves. These are township-wide notes and do not place any Native site at the village, which was laid out in 1900.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

48,532 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-31. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-02): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-02 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
