How Parma began

Parma began in 1816 when Benajah Fay and his family settled the area then called Greenbriar, southwest of Cleveland; the township organized under the name Parma in 1826, reportedly chosen by Dr. David Long after Parma, Italy, which had impressed him on his travels. It stayed farm country for a century, then boomed after developer H.A. Stahl's 1919 Ridgewood Gardens 'model village' subdivision and again after the Second World War, when population rocketed from 28,897 in 1950 to more than 100,000 by 1970, briefly making it, by the city's own account, the fastest-growing city in the United States. Parma incorporated as a village in 1924 and a city in 1931, and today is a residential and commercial suburb of about 81,000 with large Ukrainian, Polish and Slovak communities anchored by Ridge Road's Polish Village and Ukrainian Village districts.

Where the name comes from

The settlement was first called Greenbriar. Around 1826, township namer Dr. David Long, recently returned from travel in Italy and struck by the city of Parma there, proposed the name for the new township; the classical Latin word 'parma' itself denoted a small round shield carried by Roman legionaries, though that is the origin of the Italian city's name rather than a direct reference chosen by Long.

Before the town

No source we reviewed documents a specific historic Native American village, camp or treaty boundary within present Parma. Local tradition recorded on Parma's own Wikipedia article associates the high ground where the 1849 Phillip Henninger House was later built -- one of Cuyahoga County's higher points -- with earlier Erie use for fire signaling and prayer, but we could not confirm that claim with a second, independent source, and the county-level record treats the Erie's presence specifically within Ohio, as opposed to further east along Lake Erie, as historically uncertain; it is given here as local tradition, not established fact. Parma lies well within the area confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville and the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry to be part of the ceded Connecticut Western Reserve.

Stories

The model village that filled in the farmland

Through the 19th century Parma Township stayed what it had been since Benajah Fay's family arrived in 1816: scattered farms southwest of Cleveland. That changed in 1919, when Shaker Heights developer H.A. Stahl bought roughly 1,000 acres and platted Ridgewood Gardens, advertised as a planned 'model village' with its own churches, schools, a movie theater and a community house, pitched to Cleveland workers as healthy high ground '325 feet above Lake Erie.' The subdivision, built out through the 1920s and 1930s, gave Parma its first real residential backbone, and it was followed after the Second World War by a much larger wave: the population nearly tripled between 1950 and 1960, and by 1956 city boosters were calling Parma the fastest-growing city in the country. By 1970 it held just over 100,000 people, a hundredfold increase from the farm township of a century before.

The sauce that outlived its inventor's restaurant

Ettore Boiardi left Piacenza, Italy, for Ellis Island in 1914 at sixteen and rose through Cleveland's Hotel Winton kitchen before opening his own restaurant, Il Giardino d'Italia, downtown. Customers kept asking to take his spaghetti sauce home, so in the 1920s he started selling it in milk bottles, then partnered with Maurice and Eva Weiner to can it for national distribution under a name non-Italian shoppers could actually pronounce: Chef Boy-Ar-Dee. He moved manufacturing out of Ohio in 1938 but kept Cleveland restaurants running for years afterward, and when he died on June 21, 1985, at eighty-seven, it was in a nursing home in Parma -- the Cleveland suburb where a name born of a Cleveland kitchen quietly came to rest.
