Life story

Mike Good was born in Parma in 1962 and grew up in Broadview Heights, Cuyahoga County, where he ran cross country and track and spent several high school summers on the city's garbage trucks before graduating from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School in 1980. He studied aerospace engineering at Notre Dame (B.S. 1984, M.S. 1986) and was commissioned through its ROTC program, then became one of only two Air Force navigators ever chosen as astronauts, flying F-111s in England and flight-testing the B-2 bomber and the F-15. NASA selected him in 2000; on STS-125 in May 2009, the fifth and final Hubble servicing mission, he made two spacewalks to overhaul the telescope, and on STS-132 in May 2010 he made two more to replace space station batteries. He logged nearly 30 hours of spacewalking in all, retired from the Air Force as a colonel in 2009 and from NASA in 2019. Ohio counts him among its 25 astronauts as Michael T. Good of Broadview Heights.

Stories

The garbage man of Broadview Heights

Before his second flight Good told NASA that he lived in Broadview Heights, about ten miles south of Cleveland, from childhood until he left for college: close enough to go downtown for ball games, far enough out for suburban summers and snowy winters. For three or four high school summers he worked on the city's garbage trucks, picking up his own family's and his friends' trash; some residents left him cookies and drinks in their mailboxes. A cross-country and track runner, he often ran the whole route instead of riding on the back of the truck. Asked why so many astronauts came from Ohio and Cleveland, he recalled Neil Armstrong suggesting it might be a place where people worked with their hands on mechanical things.

Riding with Hubble

Good's first flight, STS-125 in May 2009, was the last servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. Before launch, he said, he used to stand in his driveway watching Hubble cross the night sky like a bright star and imagine hanging on to it. When Atlantis rendezvoused, the telescope grew from a pinpoint of light until the crew grabbed it with the robot arm and berthed it in the payload bay, where Good and his crewmates opened its doors and worked inside. He made two of the mission's five spacewalks, logging nearly 16 hours outside, and the overhauled telescope got new instruments, batteries, gyroscopes and a computer.
