How Middleburg Heights began
Middleburg Heights' land was part of Middleburg Township, named for settlers who had come from Middleburg, New York; its first white settler, Jared Hickox, arrived in August 1809 after accepting a free 50-acre tract from proprietor Gideon Granger, but died suddenly on the road from Cleveland the following year. Settlement stayed slow for decades because of the township's wet, swampy terrain, and by the mid-1800s three-quarters of Middleburg remained dense, unsettled woodland; a stone-quarry industry beginning in 1842 drew German and later Polish immigrant families. Berea split off in 1850 and Brook Park absorbed ten square miles in 1914; the remaining township, threatened with annexation by Berea, incorporated itself as a village in the 1920s (sources differ on the exact year) and became the city of Middleburg Heights in 1961. Cleveland's development of what became Cleveland Hopkins International Airport took many local farms starting in 1925, and the federal government took another 294 acres in 1942 for a wartime bomber plant; the city's lone National Register listing, the 19th-century Old District 10 Schoolhouse, survives as a marker of the one-room-school era that preceded this growth, and the city today has about 16,000 residents.

Where the name comes from
Middleburg Township took its name from early settlers who had migrated to the area from Middleburg, New York. Middleburg Heights later took its name from the township.
Before the town
No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Middleburg Heights. The area lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories
A settler's fifty acres, and a sudden death on the road
Gideon Granger, the Connecticut proprietor who owned Middleburg Township, offered fifty free acres to whoever would become its first settler, and in August 1809 Jared Hickox took him up on it, building a home on the Bagley road about halfway between the future village of Berea and the old turnpike. He did not have long to enjoy the bargain: the following year, riding home alone from Cleveland, Hickox died suddenly on the road, probably of heart disease, leaving a large family behind. His daughter Rachel Ann went on to marry Abram Fowls in 1812 in the township's first recorded wedding, and their daughter Lucy, born the next year, was the first white child born in Middleburg -- so that within four years of Hickox's death, the settlement he had founded for fifty acres of land had already produced its own second generation.
One schoolhouse standing for a township of them
Before Middleburg Heights had any village government of its own, its scattered farm families -- descended in part from the Hickox family who arrived from New York state by way of Connecticut around 1809 -- sent their children to a network of small, numbered one-room schoolhouses, the way most rural Ohio townships educated children through the 19th century. District 10's schoolhouse is the one that survived long enough, and intact enough, to be added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, a rare physical reminder of an educational system that the village-then-city's own 20th-century consolidated schools eventually replaced entirely. Like many surviving one-room schoolhouses across Ohio, it now stands less as a functioning building than as a marker of how differently -- and how locally -- rural children were once taught, a single preserved room standing in for a whole vanished system of numbered districts.
