How North Randall began

North Randall was part of Warrensville Township and known in the early 1800s as Plank Road Station; the 1857 extension of the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad opened the farming community to its neighbors, and it incorporated as a village in 1908. That same year the North Randall Park race track opened and quickly gained a national reputation, making the breeding and training of trotting horses the village's major early-20th-century industry; a second track, Thistledown, opened in 1925 and still runs the Ohio Derby every June, reopening as Thistledown Racino in 2010. The old race track site became something entirely different in 1976, when the $175 million, 2.2-million-square-foot Randall Park Mall opened with 200 stores and seven anchors, one of the largest shopping complexes in the country; it declined after its owner's 1994 death and closed on March 12, 2009, and Amazon opened an 855,000-square-foot fulfillment center employing 2,000 people on the demolished site in 2018.

Settled 1850s (in earnest, following the 1857 Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad extension); earlier known as Plank Road Station, incorporated 1908, from Warrensville Township.

Stories

From trotting horses to one of the country's biggest malls, to a warehouse

The same ground has hosted three completely different American economies within a single century. In 1908, the year North Randall incorporated, the North Randall Park race track opened and quickly became nationally known, turning the village into a center for breeding and training trotting horses -- an identity reinforced in 1925 when the nearby Thistledown track opened and took on the Ohio Derby. By the mid-1970s that horse-country identity had given way to retail: Randall Park Mall opened in 1976 at a cost of $175 million, one of the largest shopping complexes in the country at 2.2 million square feet with 200 stores and seven anchors. It did not survive its owner's 1994 death by much more than a decade, closing in 2009 and standing derelict -- photographed in its abandoned state in 2014 -- until it was demolished and replaced in 2018 by an Amazon fulfillment center, a single 855,000-square-foot building employing 2,000 people where a mall, and before that a racetrack, once stood.

43,290 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
