How Mason Township, Lawrence County began

Mason Township lies in the northeastern corner of Lawrence County and is the only Mason Township in Ohio. It was organized before the 1840 census, drew Virginia and Ohio River families in the 1820s and 1830s, and had two post offices, Arabia and Greasy Ridge, by 1850. It is rural and agricultural, with orchards, and its two small unincorporated communities are Arabia and Yarico; the population was 1,921 in 1900 and 974 in 2020. No incorporated town has ever been located in it.

Settled 1828 (John White takes up a timber tract in Mason Township, per Willard 1916), incorporated by 1840 (first appears in the county census; Wikipedia says only 'before 1873').

Where the name comes from

No source found records the specific reasoning behind the township's name; it is the only Mason Township statewide in Ohio.

Before the town

No source found records a Native village, mound, trail, or treaty event specific to Mason Township. The township lies within the Ohio River lands ceded at the 1795 Treaty of Greenville; the county's broader Native history is covered at the county level. Willard's 1916 history, which records the white families who came in 1828 and 1831, does not mention any Native residents.

Stories

Two Virginia families on the Mason Township hills

John White came first. A Botetourt County, Virginia, man who moved his family to Lawrence County in 1828, he took up a tract of timber in Mason Township and cleared it into a farm; his wife Nancy MacFarland died soon after they arrived. Three years later Micajah Dillon, born in County Galway and raised in Franklin County, Virginia, made an overland journey in 1831 and bought wild land in the county. His son Samuel married White's daughter Mary, and the young couple began housekeeping in a log cabin where bears, deer, wolves and wild turkeys damaged the crops. Mary Dillon carded, spun and wove the cloth for the family's clothes. Their son John William Dillon, born in Mason Township on October 18, 1834, began school at four in an abandoned log cabin supported by subscription, learned the farm work with axe and hoe, and was licensed to preach in 1856. In 1849 his father sold the Mason Township farm and bought land near Millersport on the Ohio River.
