How Guyan Township, Gallia County began
Guyan Township, named for Guyan Creek and lying in southern Gallia County across the Ohio River from Cabell County, West Virginia, holds the village of Crown City in its southern end and no other incorporated municipality. Its best-known native daughter is Emma "Grandma" Gatewood, born in the township's Mercerville community in 1887, who at age 67 became the first woman to hike the Appalachian Trail solo, and later helped establish Ohio's Buckeye Trail. Nancy Zimpher, who went on to lead the State University of New York system, also has documented ties to the township.
Settled 1814 (first cabin, at the site of Crown City), incorporated December 4, 1826 (township organized), by William Garlick and E. Hobbs.
Where the name comes from
The township is named for Guyan Creek, which runs through it; it is the only township named "Guyan" in Ohio.
Before the town
No source found records a Native village, mound, or treaty event specific to Guyan Township. "Guyan" itself echoes the Guyandotte River of West Virginia, whose name is often traced to a Native or French-Native hybrid origin in regional tradition, but no source consulted confirms that etymology for Gallia County's Guyan Creek specifically, so it is not asserted here. The township lies within Gallia County's broader Shawnee homeland of the pre-1795 Ohio River valley.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee.
Timeline
- — William Garlick and E. Hobbs build the first cabin in the township at the site of Crown City; a settlement follows early on Indian Guyan Creek at the mouth of Little Creek.
- — William Janson builds a log gristmill with one set of stones on Indian Guyan Creek and adds a sawmill in 1820; the first school building, of logs, goes up near the mouth of George's Creek.
- — Guyan Township is organized on December 4; the first election is held at John Swindler's house the first Monday in April 1827, with eleven votes cast.
- — A Baptist society is formed on Indian Guyan Creek; Rev. John Lee had preached earlier at John Swindler's house.
- — A Sabbath school is organized by Mr. Holley; another follows at Mercerville in 1849.
- — A squad of Morgan's raiders enters Crown City on their way to the Ohio River; several are killed and a number drown trying to cross.
- — The census counts 2,277 people in the township, up 998 in ten years, and 248 in Crown City; tobacco is a growing crop, and five post offices serve the township.
- — Emma Rowena Caldwell -- later famous as "Grandma" Gatewood -- is born in Mercerville, Guyan Township, the fourth of 15 children of a Civil War veteran father who had lost a leg in the war.
- — Emma Caldwell marries Perry Clayton Gatewood; the 34-year marriage that follows is marked by his repeated violence toward her.
- — Gatewood's divorce from Perry Clayton Gatewood is granted, after she testified against him at a hearing following a beating that broke her teeth and cracked a rib.
- — At age 67, Gatewood begins a solo thru-hike of the roughly 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail, completing it in 146 days and becoming the first woman known to hike the entire trail alone in one season.
- — Gatewood dies of a heart attack at age 85, having hiked the Appalachian Trail three times, walked 2,000 miles of the Oregon Trail, and helped develop Ohio's Buckeye Trail.

Stories
From a beating in Gallia County to the first solo Appalachian Trail hike
Emma Rowena Caldwell grew up in a crowded log cabin in Mercerville, Guyan Township, one of 15 children born to a Civil War veteran who had lost a leg in the war and struggled afterward with drink and gambling. She finished only the eighth grade but taught herself the woodland plants and wildlife that would later serve her well on the trail. At 19 she married Perry Clayton Gatewood, and the marriage turned abusive almost immediately; he beat her repeatedly over 34 years, and she raised eleven children while enduring it. In September 1940, after a beating left her with broken teeth and a cracked rib, she finally filed for divorce, testifying against him at the hearing that ended the marriage in February 1941. By 1951, with all eleven children grown, she read a 1949 National Geographic article about the Appalachian Trail and decided, at 67, to walk it alone -- telling her family only that she was "going on a walk." She set out May 3, 1955, wearing Keds sneakers and carrying a homemade denim bag rather than a proper pack, and finished the roughly 2,050-mile trail in 146 days, the first woman known to have thru-hiked it solo. She went on to hike it twice more, walk 2,000 miles of the Oregon Trail at age 71, and in her later years help develop what became Ohio's own Buckeye Trail, leading annual Hocking Hills hikes that eventually drew thousands of participants. She died in 1973 at 85, and the Grandma Gatewood Memorial Trail in Hocking Hills State Park now carries her name.
