How Delaware Township, Hancock County began
Delaware Township, in the southeastern corner of Hancock County, was first entered by settler Asa M. Lake in 1822 and organized under the name "Welfare" in 1828 before being renamed Delaware in 1829. The renaming is attributed by the county's 1881 history to the fact that the Delaware (Lenape) people had made this part of the county a favorite resort. Lake laid out the town of Mount Blanchard on the Blanchard River within the township in 1830, and the township's early institutional life -- its first school, first flouring mill, and first church building, a Methodist Episcopal one -- clustered around that settlement through the 1830s. Today it remains a rural township of about 1,200 people whose only incorporated community is Mount Blanchard.

When Hancock County's commissioners first organized this corner of the county in 1828, they called it Welfare Township. Within a year the name was changed to Delaware -- and the 1881 county history is specific about why: the area had long been "a favorite resort" of the Delaware (Lenape) people, and the new name was meant to record that. It is a small detail in an otherwise settler-focused chronicle, but it is one of the few places in the county's early written record where a township's own name is explained as a direct acknowledgment of prior Native use of the land, rather than being named for a president, a home county back east, or a local family. The 1881 history does not say which Delaware band, where exactly in the township they camped, or when they left; it preserves only the fact of the association and the choice to keep it in the name.
