How Green Township, Clinton County began
Green Township occupies the southeastern corner of Clinton County, land that belonged to Highland County until Clinton County was formed from Highland and Warren counties in 1810; the township itself organized around 1807-1809, before Clinton County existed as a separate county at all. Its first settler, Morgan Van Meter of Morgantown, Virginia, built the township's first log cabin near Snow Hill in 1800. The township's main village, New Vienna, grew out of an 1835 plat originally nicknamed Buzzard's Glory; the smaller hamlet of New Antioch followed in 1851.

The township's southeastern edge, near the Fallsville Wildlife Area, sits close to the Highland County line; the ghost town of Fallsville itself, for which the wildlife area and waterfall are named, was in Highland County, not Clinton, so no Native history tied to that lost town belongs to Green Township specifically.

Stories
Buzzard's Glory becomes New Vienna
Before it was New Vienna, the settlement in the southeastern part of Green Township carried a very different name: Buzzard's Glory. The 1915 county history ties the nickname to a tannery incident around 1812-1813 — the kind of blunt, unflattering name common to early Ohio crossroads before boosters got hold of them. When the village was formally platted on April 21, 1835, Harkens T. Van Winkle renamed it New Vienna, and the more genteel name stuck. The Hussey brothers, Joshua and Stephen, who had emigrated from North Carolina in 1806-07, had already settled the ground the village grew on.
A first cabin at Snow Hill
Green Township's settlement story starts in 1800, ten years before Clinton County existed, when Morgan Van Meter arrived from Morgantown, Virginia and put up what the 1915 county history calls the first log cabin built in the township, near a place called Snow Hill. The ground became part of Clinton County only when that county was formed from Highland and Warren counties in 1810. Van Meter's cabin thus predates the county, the township government, and the eventual village of New Vienna by a full generation.
