How Gates Mills began
Gates Mills was founded in 1826 when Holsey Gates (also spelled Halsey Gates in some sources) bought 130 acres of Chagrin River land from the Connecticut Land Company; the site's good water power drew more mills, giving the village its name, and by 1850 it was a thriving exporter of potash, cheese, and rake-factory goods along with milled agricultural products. The water-powered mills declined after the Civil War until the 1890s, when Cleveland businessmen Samuel Prentiss Baldwin, Frank Ginn, and Frank Walker remade Gates Mills as a country retreat, a transformation cemented by the Cleveland & Eastern interurban railway's 1899 arrival, the 1905 founding of the Gates Mills Improvement Society, and the 1909 establishment of the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club. The village incorporated in 1920, part of the same early-1900s breakup of old Mayfield Township that produced Highland Heights and Mayfield Village.
Settled 1826 (Holsey/Halsey Gates buys 130 acres of Chagrin River land from the Connecticut Land Company), incorporated 1920, by Holsey Gates (also spelled Halsey Gates).
Where the name comes from
The village is named for its founder, Holsey (or Halsey) Gates, who bought the original land and built the first watermill; the excellent water power then drew several more mills, and the plural 'Mills' in the name reflects that later cluster rather than a single operation.
Before the town
No source we reviewed identifies a specific, named Native American village, mound, or treaty site within present Gates Mills; the land was bought from the Connecticut Land Company as part of old Mayfield Township, ceded to the United States by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Stories
From working mills to a country retreat
For its first half-century Gates Mills earned its name honestly: Holsey Gates's original 1826 watermill on the Chagrin River drew others to the same good water power, and by 1850 the resulting cluster of mills was exporting potash, cheese, rakes, and other manufactured goods out of what was still frontier Ohio. The Civil War broke that momentum -- the water-powered mills languished afterward, and the village's industrial vitality declined through the 1870s and 1880s. What revived Gates Mills was not new industry but the opposite: in the 1890s, Cleveland businessmen Samuel Prentiss Baldwin, Frank Ginn, and Frank Walker chose the quiet, half-abandoned mill village as their country retreat, and within two decades the Cleveland & Eastern interurban, an Improvement Society dedicated to preserving the village's character, and the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club had all arrived, turning a played-out industrial hamlet into one of Cleveland's most deliberately preserved suburbs.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
