How Chester Township, Wayne County began
Chester Township lies on Wayne County's western edge, bordering Ashland County, and was organized on March 5, 1816; before then it is said to have been known as Chestnut township, for its great growth of chestnut trees. James Robison, a Pennsylvanian who built a sawmill on the Little Killbuck in 1813, is probably its first settler, and his Robison's Mill and woolen factory were the neighborhood's landmark. New Pittsburg was laid out in 1829 and West Union, later Lattasburg, in 1851. The township has no incorporated village and had 3,043 residents in 2020.

Where the name comes from
Before its organization the area was known as Chestnut Township, or the chestnut region, from its great growth of chestnut trees; the 1878 county history does not explain when or why the shorter name Chester replaced it.
Before the town
No Native village, trail, mound or treaty event specific to Chester Township is recorded in the 1878 county history. Wayne County as a whole has a recorded Delaware (Lenape), Wyandot and Shawnee history.
Timeline
- — James Robison, a native of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, builds a sawmill on the Little Killbuck in the southeast corner of the township; the county historian thinks him very nearly the first white settler.
- — Robison marries Margaret Wilson and brings her sixty-five miles on horseback to his forest farm; the sawmill and a woolen factory later made 'Robison's Mill' a landmark.
- Early settlement — Chester's earliest settlers include Judge James Robison, Samuel Funk, Phineas Summerton, John Moyers, John Emery, John Lowry, the Cunninghams, Adam Rumbaugh and John, Abram and Isaac Myers; a number of the names on the county history's list would now fall in Ashland County.
- — Robison sits in the Ohio legislature from December 6, 1824 to December 5, 1825 and is re-elected in 1830; he is appointed associate judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1831.
- — West Union is surveyed on February 27 by J. W. Hoegner for Jacob Grose (plat recorded January 26, 1854); in 1855 it is renamed Lattasburg for Ephraim Latta, who made hand sickles there.

Stories
Robison's Mill
James Robison reached Wayne County in 1813 and built a sawmill on the Little Killbuck in the southeast corner of what became Chester Township. He spent three months, with a single helper, digging the mill race. The water power supported a woolen factory too, one of the best in the county, which carded, spun and then made yarns, blankets and cloth. While he was at Columbus as a legislator, a defective flue burned the factory and sawmill; without recrimination he came home and rebuilt both with new machinery. During the War of 1812 his wagon, loaded with flour for Harrison's army at Fort Meigs, stood in the woods on what is still called Robison Hill. His mill name stuck: long after the mill rotted, 'Robison's Mill' was the way the neighborhood gave directions.
West Union becomes Lattasburg
Jacob Grose had West Union surveyed in February 1851, though the plat was not recorded until 1854. John Fasig built the first house, a log structure on the northeast corner of the public square that served as home and shop. Ephraim Latta bought him out and began making hand sickles, and in 1855 the town took his name. The post office came in May 1867 with W. C. Baker as postmaster; Samuel Bridenstein opened the first dry-goods store and Henry Allspaugh was the first settled doctor.
