How Wooster began

Wooster was laid out in the fall of 1808 on Killbuck Creek by its proprietors, John Bever, William Henry and Joseph H. Larwill, and named by Larwill for Revolutionary War General David Wooster, killed defending New Haven, Connecticut, in 1777. Wooster was made the seat of justice of Wayne County on May 30, 1811, after the site first chosen, Madison, was abandoned, and was incorporated as a town on October 13, 1817 and chartered as a city of the second class in 1868-69. The University of Wooster (now the College of Wooster) was chartered in 1866, and the present Second Empire county courthouse was completed in 1879. Wooster had 27,232 residents in 2020.

Settled 1796 (earliest area settlers, per Wayne County Historical Society); 1808 (town site), platted 1808 (town site laid out); plat dated September 7, 1816 in the county's 1910 plat table, incorporated 1817 (town); city status later, by John Bever, William Henry and Joseph H. Larwill, proprietors (the Larwill brothers William, Joseph and John were the first settlers).

Where the name comes from

Named for Major General David Wooster (1711-1777), a Connecticut militia officer killed defending New Haven against a British raid during the Revolutionary War.

Before the town

Wooster sits on Killbuck Creek, a tributary of the Walhonding River that carries the name of Killbuck (Gelelemend, c. 1737-1811), a Delaware (Lenape) leader whose village stood on the creek roughly ten miles south of the future townsite. No site-specific Native village, mound or treaty event within the city of Wooster itself is recorded; the area was evidently unoccupied or only used seasonally by 1808, when the Larwill brothers and their partners platted the town on land only recently opened by the cessions that followed the 1795 Treaty of Greenville and later purchases.

Nations recorded here: Delaware (Lenape), Wyandot, Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — John Bever, William Henry and Joseph Larwill establish Wooster on Killbuck Creek, naming it for Revolutionary War General David Wooster.
  2. — Benjamin Miller, the first married man to settle in Wooster, moves in from Stark County in the spring and opens a house of entertainment; the Larwills' first house, a 'hog-temple' on East Liberty street built with a broad-ax and drawing knife, is raised when the town is laid out.
  3. — John Bever builds a two-story brick house at Wooster on the Bissell corner, called the first brick house built in Wayne County; it later holds seven families and a doctor's office.
  4. — Wooster is made the seat of justice of Wayne County; the first commissioners had chosen Madison, an eminence southeast of the city on lands of Bezaleel Wells, but dissatisfaction led the legislature to name new commissioners, and only one cabin was ever built there.
  5. — The first store of importance in Wooster opens in a wooden building put up by Robert McClarran.
  6. — The first post office in Wayne County is established at Wooster, with Thomas G. Jones appointed postmaster on December 8, 1812.
  7. — The court orders the plat of the town of Madison vacated in April after its proprietors, Bezaleel Wells, John Shorb and Joseph Dorsey, return the money paid for lots.
  8. — Wooster is incorporated as a town on October 13; the first election of town officers is held in March 1818.
  9. — Levi Cox and Carlos Hickox publish the Ohio Spectator, the first newspaper published in Wooster and the county.
  10. — Wooster Fire Company No. 1 holds a meeting at a private house in Wooster, one of the earliest fire companies recorded in the town.
  11. — Adam Foss starts a brush factory in a small third-floor room on the east side of the Wooster public square; it grows into the Wooster Brush Works.
  12. — The first passenger train reaches Wooster on the Ohio and Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago) railroad on August 10, 1852, met by a crowd estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 and a public dinner.
  13. — The University of Wooster (now the College of Wooster) is chartered by the joint Presbyterian Synods of Ohio.
  14. — Wooster advances to a city of the second class, and is divided into four wards on February 24, 1869 (the 1878 history also gives February 9, 1869).
  15. — Wooster has over 7,000 people, lies on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway, is lit by gas, has 'the best system of natural water works in Ohio,' hose companies with two steamers, and is only beginning to manufacture.
  16. — The present Wayne County Courthouse, designed by architect Thomas Boyd in the Second Empire style, is completed on the public square.
  17. — In 1891 Wayne County's offer is accepted over those of Clarke and Warren counties for the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station. The county commissioners issue $85,000 in bonds, and 470 acres, the nearest point one mile south of the Wooster courthouse, are bought. The station moves from Columbus in summer 1892. A suit over the bonds lasts about two years; the supreme court, four to one, reverses the lower courts, and the Legislature redeems the county's bonds.
  18. — The Carnegie-funded Wooster public library opens at Quinby and Bowman streets; it cost $30,000, of which Andrew Carnegie gave $15,000.
  19. — The Wayne County Courthouse District is added to the National Register of Historic Places.
  20. — The census counts 26,119 in 2010, 24,811 in 2000 and 22,191 in 1990.
  21. — Wooster's population reaches 27,232 in the federal census, up from 291 at the city's first census in 1810.

Stories

The first house in Wooster

Douglass's 1878 history says the first settlers in Wooster and Wayne County were the three Larwill brothers, William, Joseph and John. The first house in the town was a "hog-temple" on East Liberty street, built mainly with a broad-ax and drawing-knife and raised while the town was being laid out; its first occupants were William Larwill and a young man named Abraham Miller. Abraham's father, Benjamin Miller, came from Stark County with his wife and family in the spring of 1809 and opened a house of entertainment. He was the first married man to settle in the town or county, kept its first tavern, and was the father of the first white child born there, a girl christened Tillie Miller by John Bever.

A courthouse built in an offset plan

The Wayne County Courthouse on Wooster's public square was designed by Thomas Boyd in the Second Empire style and built of sandstone between 1877 and 1879. Boyd first designed a symmetrical building separate from the old north annex, but officials, citing funding concerns, required the new building to connect to the old one, which gave it an offset appearance. Its entrances are flanked by Atlantes supporting a pediment, and the Wayne County Courthouse District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 26, 1973.

Prices in 1818

John Larwill, who came to Wooster as a boy and entered the dry goods business in a frame building next to his brick house in 1826, kept the trade until 1862, and in 1878 he wrote out what things cost in the town in 1818. Coffee was 62 and a half cents a pound, tea $3.00 a pound, common keg tobacco 50 cents, coarse muslin 50 cents a yard and calico 50 to 95 cents. Nails cost 18 to 20 cents a pound, iron 16 cents, and salt $4.00 a bushel, with indigo sold by the ounce. The town around him was small: when Sprague arrived in 1820 it had two lawyers, Cox and Avery, two doctors, McPhail and Daniel O. Hoyt, and stores kept by Benjamin Jones, William McComb, Bentley and the Larwills. The Ohio Spectator, started in 1817 as the county's first newspaper, was the seed of the two weeklies, the Republican and the Democrat, that the history counted among the most vigorous in northern Ohio in 1878.

The county seat that was never built

Wayne County's first commissioners picked an eminence southeast of Wooster, on lands of Bezaleel Wells and his company, as the seat of justice and called the place Madison. People were dissatisfied with the choice, the legislature appointed new commissioners, and they chose Wooster instead, which was made the seat of justice on May 30, 1811. Only a single cabin was ever built at Madison. Its proprietors, Wells, John Shorb and Joseph Dorsey, returned the money they had received from lot buyers, and applied to the court in February 1814 to vacate the town; the court ordered the plat vacated at its April session that year. Wooster, laid out in the fall of 1808 by John Bever, William Henry and Joseph Larwill and named by Larwill for Revolutionary General David Wooster, kept the courthouse.

Almost every day here is a measurement: 91% of them come from a rain gauge standing inside Wooster itself.

48,674 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-31. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-02): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-02 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
