Did you know
  • All of Canton's drinking water comes from wells 100-200 feet into aquifers left behind by glaciers — the city has no river or reservoir source at all.
  • In 2024 Canton pulled 6.30 billion gallons from three separate well fields, and can take any one plant offline and still supply the city from the other two.
  • Canton tested for 29 PFAS 'forever chemicals' in two rounds of EPA's UCMR5 program in 2024 and found none detectable in its water supply.
  • Canton's sewage plant is a membrane bioreactor rated for 39 million gallons a day, discharging by gravity into Nimishillen Creek.
History5
  • 1870Canton built Holly water works to Joseph L. Pillsbury's design, pumping directly from Meyers Lake; its cement-lined wrought-iron mains soon gave way to cast iron.
  • 1873Meyers Lake was replaced as the city's source by water from Nimishillen Creek, and later by artesian wells — the start of Canton's shift to groundwater.
  • 2019Ohio EPA cited a significant deficiency on March 12, 2019 at Cromer Reservoir: poor roof and walls, exposed rebar, corroded inlet and outlet, and deep sediment.
  • 2022Canton finished the Cromer condition assessment, decided to build a new reservoir, hired Arcadis to design it, and began the Sugarcreek plant renovation in October.
  • 2024Canton's three well fields produced 6.30 billion gallons — Sugarcreek 3.15B, Northeast 1.85B, Northwest 1.30B.
Treatment & pressure

How it is treated

100% groundwater: three well fields (Northeast, Northwest, Sugarcreek) draw 100-200 ft into glacial sand-and-gravel aquifers, feeding three plants that aerate, filter, chlorinate and fluoridate. Nearly 30 million gallons is held in enclosed reservoirs.

Water pressure

not published — neither the 2024 CCR nor the March 2026 rate sheet states a system-wide psi figure.

What it costs

$4.84 per 1,000 gallons

Eff. Mar 29, 2026: $3.6219/100 cu ft inside city for the first 4,500 cu ft ($2.8978 above); 5/8-in minimum $8.15/mo; outside-city bills carry a 150% surcharge.

Projects & plans2

Recent and current work

  • Sugar Creek WTP renovation · 2022-2025 · under construction
Well heads 1-7, raw water mains, aerators, clearwell baffles and rebuilt filters with air wash; substantial completion due late fall 2025.

Planned or needed

  • New Cromer Reservoir · 2026 · planned
Replaces the reservoir Ohio EPA flagged in 2019; bidding May 2025, construction November 2025, substantial completion targeted November 2026.
Supply stress

Source Water Assessments rate all three well fields highly susceptible to contamination — the aquifers are shallow and permeable — though Canton reported no PFAS in two rounds of UCMR5 testing. Three independent plants plus ~30 million gallons of reserve storage cover single-point failures.

Sewers

Sanitary

Canton's Water Reclamation Facility treats sanitary sewage from across the greater Stark County area, designed for 39 MGD average and 88 MGD peak flow using grit and grease removal, fine screening, flow equalization, membrane bioreactors and post-aeration, discharging by gravity to Nimishillen Creek.

Storm

Canton adopted a stormwater utility in 2025, effective Jan. 1, 2026: $3.75/month for one-to-three-family homes and $3.75-$325 for other parcels by impervious area, with credits up to 20%.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside 44608 (Sugar Creek Township and Beach City), so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,607 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
