How Wilmot began

Wilmot, in Sugar Creek Township in southwestern Stark County, was laid out and recorded as Milton by its owners Jacob and Henry Wyant; the 1881 county history dates the plat of 57 lots to April 1830, while Wikipedia gives 1836. George Pfouts opened the first store and became the first postmaster, and a foundry begun by Wyant & Putnam around 1830 grew into a maker of threshing machines, the Pitt Separator and the Excelsior Reaper and Mower. A woolen factory, a cabinet shop, a carriage shop and a steam flour mill followed, the flour going by wagon to the railroad at Beach City. The village peaked at 412 residents in 1880 and had 282 in 2020.

Platted April 1830 as Milton, per the 1881 county history (Wikipedia gives 1836), by Jacob and Henry Wyant, owners; lots surveyed by John Whitacre, County Surveyor.

Where the name comes from

The town was laid out and recorded as Milton; the 1881 county history says the name was later changed to Wilmot but that the date of the change was not known. Wikipedia records a post office named Wilmot operating since 1866. No source consulted explains why either name was chosen.

Before the town

No Native village, mound or trail within Wilmot is recorded in the 1881 county history's chapter on Sugar Creek Township or in the other sources consulted. Sugar Creek Township lies west of the Tuscarawas River, in the New Purchase whose Native title the United States acquired at the Treaty of Fort Industry in 1805, not at Greenville in 1795.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Stories

The Wilmot reaper works

Around 1830 the partners Wyant & Putnam started a foundry and repair shop at Wilmot, casting plows, stoves and hollow-ware, with the machinery driven by cattle or horses walking a large tread-wheel. After Wyant died the works passed to Putnam, Johnson & Co., who about 1846 began building threshing machines that beat the grain from the straw. Five or six years later they began making the Pitt Separator, and about the start of the Civil War they added the Excelsior Reaper and Mower, more than a hundred of which were said to be built each year and sold across the country. Between twenty and thirty men worked there at a time. By 1881 reapers, mowers and threshers had been dropped, and the shop made hay rakes, hay loaders, a few threshers and plows.

Samuel Toomey's buggies

About 1853 Samuel Toomey opened a blacksmith and carriage-making business in Wilmot and for ten or twelve years built large numbers of light carriages and buggies. The 1881 county history says that when he started he told buyers not to let more than two people ride in one at a time. It adds that some of those same buggies were still running in 1881 and could carry 1,500 pounds. Toomey later moved his business to Dover, where the history says it grew far larger.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
