How Walton Hills began

The land that became Walton Hills was carved from the southwestern part of Bedford Township. An early attempt to develop it, R. B. Hartwig's 1922 Robinhurst Heights subdivision meant as low-income workers' housing, collapsed with the Great Depression. Real-estate developer Ludwig S. Conelly bought the J. C. Walton farm in 1937 and laid roads, including the new Walton Road that gave the future village its name, and set 40,000-square-foot minimum lot sizes to build an exclusive, spacious-lot 'country village' instead. Walton Hills incorporated in 1951, and in 1954 the Ford Motor Company opened a stamping plant there that ran for sixty years before closing in 2014.

Platted 1937 (Ludwig S. Conelly buys the J. C. Walton farm and lays roads, including Walton Road), incorporated 1951, from the southwestern part of Bedford Township, by Ludwig S. Conelly (developer who shaped the village's roads and lot sizes).

Where the name comes from

The village takes its name from Walton Road, itself named for J. C. Walton, whose farm developer Ludwig S. Conelly bought in 1937 and subdivided with large, exclusive lots.

Before the town

No source we reviewed identifies a specific, named Native American village, mound, or treaty site within present Walton Hills; the land was part of southwestern Bedford Township, in the Tinker's Creek watershed, ceded to the United States by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Stories

A failed workers' subdivision, then an exclusive country village

Walton Hills almost became something quite different from what it is today. In 1922, R. B. Hartwig platted a subdivision called Robinhurst Heights on the same ground, explicitly intended as housing for low-income workers -- but the Great Depression arrived before the plan could take hold, and it was abandoned. Fifteen years later, developer Ludwig S. Conelly bought the J. C. Walton farm and took the opposite approach: he laid out roads, including Walton Road itself, and set minimum residential lot sizes of 40,000 square feet, deliberately building toward what the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History calls an 'exclusive country village' rather than Hartwig's abandoned worker-housing vision. That large-lot character defined the village through its 1951 incorporation, even as the 1954 arrival of a Ford Motor Company stamping plant gave it a substantial industrial employer for the next sixty years, until the plant closed in 2014.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address.
