How Bedford began

Bedford grew up around a waterfall on Tinker's Creek, where Adams and Starr built the first mill in 1815; the surrounding township, organized in 1823, was renamed for a settler's New England hometown. The village incorporated in 1837 and became a chair-making center, home to the Taylor Chair Company from 1816 until its 2012 closing, one of the longest-running manufacturers in the Western Reserve. Canal and railroad traffic through the 1800s and later oil, foundry, and machine-parts industry built the town into a small city, which took city status in the 1930s. Bedford lost its northeast corner to the new city of Bedford Heights in 1951 and today is a small Cleveland suburb whose historic square and 19th-century houses anchor a National Register district.

Settled 1813-1815 (first settlers at Tinker's Creek; Elijah Nobles credited by one source as first official settler in 1810), incorporated village, March 15, 1837 (population 475); city, 1930 or 1932 (sources differ), by Adams and Starr built the first mill in 1815; Hezekiah Dunham laid out the town center with a public square.

Where the name comes from

Township 6 was renamed Bedford Township in 1823 by settler Daniel Benedict. Sources disagree on which Bedford he was honoring: Wikipedia's article on the city says Bedford, New York, while the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History says he named it for his hometown in Connecticut. No source reviewed here resolves the conflict.

Before the town

No source we reviewed identifies a specific, named Native American village, mound, or treaty site within present Bedford. The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History states only that the area was 'inhabited by Native Americans as early as 11,000 years ago,' without naming a site. The Tinker's Creek valley sits within the broader Cuyahoga region occupied by Late Prehistoric Whittlesey-culture villages (about AD 1000-1600), whose best-documented Cuyahoga County example is South Park Village; no source found here places a Whittlesey site specifically in Bedford. By the 18th century the area lay within the range of the Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot, and other nations who used the Cuyahoga River corridor as a travel route, and it was ceded to the United States by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, whose boundary line ran roughly along the Cuyahoga River not far to the west.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Stories

A cabin chairmaker becomes the Western Reserve's longest-running manufacturer

In 1816 Benjamin Franklin Fitch began turning out split-bottom chairs from his own cabin in what would become Bedford Township, using local timber and the power of Tinker's Creek. The business passed to his son-in-law William O. Taylor in the 1840s and then to Vincent A. Taylor, who took the firm to a prize at the 1876 Philadelphia International Exhibition and formal incorporation as the Taylor Chair Company in 1885 with $100,000 in capital. The company kept adapting: it began designing office furniture in 1913 and hit peak employment after World War II, staying in the same family's hands for seven generations. It finally closed for good on June 15, 2012, after 196 years, and that September the Gasser Chair Company of Youngstown bought its brand and intellectual property; the company's own archives were split between the Bedford Historical Society and the Western Reserve Historical Society.

The Square and the falls that built it

Bedford's early plan centered on a public square laid out by settler Hezekiah Dunham, with room set aside for a town hall and school, and the town hall standing there by 1874. The square and the falls of Tinker's Creek just downstream from it appear in a run of early-1900s postcards -- 'The Square, Bedford, Ohio,' shot between 1905 and 1915, and a 1913 view of the Union Street Bridge -- that survive today through the Digital Public Library of America, evidence of how central the creek and its waterpower were to the town's identity even as its economy shifted from milling to chairs, ore-handling machinery, and later pharmaceuticals.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Bedford, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

43,290 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
