How Oakwood began

Oakwood incorporated in 1951, the county's 58th municipality, after a 13-year effort by residents of southeastern Bedford Township. Decades earlier, in the 1920s, the Lincoln Heights Land Co. had marketed low-cost homesites there to Black families, pitching freedom from rent and room to raise chickens and farm small plots; the community they built organized New Bethel AME Church in 1922, the first African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Cleveland's suburbs. After incorporation the new village's zoning rules created hardship for some Black homeowners, one of whom faced threats of violence from a group of white residents, but in 1972 Oakwood became one of only three Cleveland suburbs to pass an ordinance permitting public housing, and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority opened 25 single-family homes there in 1986. The 1843 Alonzo Drake House, a Greek Revival brick house at 24262 Broadway, is the village's oldest documented building and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Incorporated 1951, after a 13-year effort by residents of southeastern Bedford Township; the county's 58th municipality; home rule charter adopted 1968.

Stories

Chickens, small farms, and a church started in a barn

Long before Oakwood was its own village, the Lincoln Heights Land Co. was selling a specific promise to Black families in the 1920s: low-cost homesites in what was then southeastern Bedford Township, free of rent, with enough ground to raise chickens or run a small truck farm. The families who bought in built community as they went -- in 1922 the Reverend Gainey Washington and a group of them organized New Bethel AME Church, meeting first in a barn before raising a concrete block church building on Lincolnville Avenue in 1947. That community's standing was still precarious after Oakwood incorporated in 1951: the new village's zoning rules created hardship for some Black homeowners, and at least one faced threats of violence from a group of white residents. Two decades later the same village took the opposite course, becoming in 1972 one of only three Cleveland suburbs to pass an ordinance permitting public housing, over the objections of residents who wanted to annex their way out of it -- a fight that eventually produced 25 single-family public housing homes, built by the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority in 1986.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
