How South Webster began
South Webster was platted in 1853 by John Bennett in eastern Scioto County's Bloom Township, and, according to Wikipedia, named for the statesman Daniel Webster; we found no other source for this. Its one National Register listing, the Tripp-Bauer Building at 51-53 North Jackson Street, was listed in 1988. The village's population has drifted down in recent decades, from 866 at the 2010 census to 670 in 2020, even as its Bloom-Vernon High School basketball team brought home the 2006 Division IV state championship.

Stories
The fire-clay hills of Frederick Creek
The hills along Frederick Creek in Bloom Township, the 1903 county history says, were 'famous the world over for the immense banks of fire clay in them.' South Webster, platted in 1853 where the Scioto & Hocking Valley Railroad reached on March 25 of that year, drew its living from the clay. In the fall of 1869 the Webster Fire Brick Company was organized, and by 1903 the brick plant employed about 200 men, plus 75 more in the clay mines on Frederick. The same clay was used as the bonding material for the paving brick made at Sciotoville and the building brick at South Webster, because it made the bricks harder and more vitrified, though alone it fused too easily to make fire brick. The village itself counted 441 people in 1900 and had four churches: Baptist, Methodist Episcopal, German Evangelical and United Brethren.

50,387 days of records, 1887-07-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
