How Piqua began

Piqua stands where the Miami village and British-allied trading post of Pickawillany stood from late 1747 until the French destroyed it in 1752, and near the site of Upper and Lower Piqua, Shawnee towns established after 1780. The first American settlers arrived after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville; the town was surveyed in 1807 as Washington and renamed Piqua by the state legislature in 1816, incorporating in 1823. It grew through the Miami and Erie Canal era (1825-1845) and later as an industrial city, earning the nickname "Favorite City" after the Favorite Stove & Range Company relocated there from Cincinnati in 1887.

Settled 1798, platted 1807, incorporated 1823.

Where the name comes from

The city's name derives from a Shawnee phrase rendered as "Othath-He-Waugh-Pe-Qua," meaning "he has risen from the ashes," associated with the Pekowi (Piqua), one of the five divisions of the Shawnee people. The town was originally platted and named Washington in 1807; the Ohio legislature changed the name to Piqua in 1816.

Before the town

The Miami people built Pickawillany at the confluence of Loramie Creek and the Great Miami River (within or immediately adjacent to present-day Piqua) in late 1747 as a trading town that dealt with British traders as well as French. In June 1752, an Odawa force under Charles de Langlade, allied with the French, attacked and destroyed Pickawillany, killing the Miami leader La Demoiselle (Memeskia) and at least one English trader. After the American Revolutionary War battle known as the Battle of Piqua (August 8, 1780), fought at a separate Shawnee town on the Mad River in present-day Clark County -- not in Miami County -- the Shawnee who survived that battle relocated and, late in 1780, founded two new villages, called Upper Piqua and Lower Piqua, near the Great Miami River in what is now Miami County. Because sources describe more than one place called "Piqua" in different eras and counties, we treat the Clark County Battle of Piqua site and the Miami County Upper/Lower Piqua villages as distinct, and do not assert that the Shawnee Piqua town destroyed in 1780 stood on the ground of the present city.

Stories

Pickawillany and the fall of an Ohio trading town

In late 1747 the Miami leader La Demoiselle, known to the French as Memeskia, established a village called Pickawillany where Loramie Creek meets the Great Miami River. Rather than deal exclusively with the French, as colonial policy expected, Pickawillany opened its doors to British traders from Pennsylvania, and it grew into an important hub for the Ohio fur trade. The French saw this as a direct threat to their claim over the Ohio Country. In June 1752, Charles de Langlade led a force of French-allied Odawa warriors against the town, killing La Demoiselle and destroying the settlement, along with capturing several British traders. The episode was one of the opening acts of the contest between Britain and France for the Ohio Valley that fed into the French and Indian War, and archaeologists have continued to survey the site near Piqua.

From Washington to Piqua

When the town at this bend of the Great Miami River was first surveyed in 1807, it had only seven houses and was platted under the name Washington. For nine years it carried that name before the Ohio legislature stepped in and renamed it Piqua in 1816, tying the new American town to the Shawnee Pekowi division whose villages had once stood in the area. The renamed town incorporated in 1823 and later grew through the Miami and Erie Canal, which reached it in the 1830s, cementing its role as a shipping and milling center on the river.

86% of these days are measurements from a gauge inside Piqua; the rest are estimated from the nearest gauges around it.

48,508 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
