How Liberty Center began
Liberty Center grew up along the Wabash Railway in Liberty Township starting in June 1863, when Alpheas Buchanan platted the first twelve lots; a series of neighbors added their own lots and additions over the following two decades, giving the village its name from the township around it. It became the second village in Henry County to incorporate, taking advantage of the status to build sidewalks, streets and drainage, and by the late 1880s supported four churches, a hardware and drug store, a roller-process grist mill and a new graded school. A post office has operated there continuously since 1858.
Platted first plat recorded June 4, 1863, by Alpheas Buchanan, incorporated second village in Henry County to incorporate (exact year not found), by Alpheas Buchanan; later additions by Calvin C. Young, E. T. Coon, G. P. Parrish, Ward Woodward, Orle Buchanan and Daniel Ehrgood.
Where the name comes from
The village takes its name from Liberty Township, in which it sits; no source consulted explains the township's own name.
Before the town
No Native village, mound or treaty site specific to the Liberty Center town site is documented; the village was platted in 1863, roughly three decades after the last Ottawa families left Henry County. The broader township's own documented native-history connection, Prairie du Masque -- a Maumee River encampment used by General Wayne's army in 1794, on ground later split between Liberty and Washington townships -- lies south of the village along the river. See the Henry County and Liberty Township files for that record.

Stories
A dozen lots at a time
Liberty Center did not spring up in a single plat the way some Henry County towns did; it grew lot by lot as neighbors along the new Wabash Railway kept adding to it. Alpheas Buchanan started it in June 1863 with just twelve lots. Over the next twenty years, Calvin C. Young, E. T. Coon and G. P. Parrish each added their own ten to eighteen lots; Ward Woodward, 'not wishing to be outdone by those to the manor born,' added a triangular tract in 1869; and Orle Buchanan, described by the county historian as 'awakening from a sort of Rip Van Winkle sleep,' built a handle and excelsior factory on his own addition a few days later, provoking 'Uncle George' Parrish to add a second tract of his own not to be outdone in turn. By 1888 this competitive, incremental growth had produced 141 platted lots, a roller-process grist mill, a printing office publishing the weekly Liberty Press, and four churches -- Methodist Episcopal, German Reformed, United Brethren and Seventh Day Adventist -- for a village the historian called 'one of the pleasantest, most prosperous and enterprising towns along the line of the Wabash Railway.'
The railroad made the village the canal could not
The Miami and Erie Canal opened to packet travel in 1843 and made towns such as Damascus and Florida the busiest points on the Maumee. On June 4, 1863 Alpheas Buchanan recorded twelve lots on its south side in Liberty Township. The county historian wrote that the Wabash destroyed the towns along the canal but turned the wilderness along its own track into flourishing villages, and named Liberty Center among them. By 1887 the village was the second in the county to incorporate, had a hotel, a roller mill, a weekly newspaper and four churches, and had used its corporate powers to lay sidewalks, streets and drains. Its post office, called Liberty Centre until 1893, had opened in 1858, five years before the first plat.

Mostly estimated. Only 2% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Liberty Center - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,817 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
