How Harrison Township, Vinton County began
Harrison Township, in the southwest corner of Vinton County, was part of Ross Township in 1798, of Jackson County in 1818, then Ross County again, until Vinton County was formed in 1850. A hilly sheep and farming township drained by the Middle Fork of Salt Creek and Pigeon Fork, it was settled along those streams by James Brady, Morris Humphrey and the Dixon, Baker and Wilkinson families. Allensville, laid out by Henry Cozad and named for William Allen, was its village. The township had 580 residents in 1850, 1,172 in 1880 and 1,084 in 2020.

A township handed back and forth
Harrison Township's lines were drawn and redrawn without a single settler moving. In 1798 the ground belonged to Ross Township; in 1818, when Jackson County was formed, it was attached to Jackson, then went back to Ross County. When Vinton County was cut from six neighbors in 1850 it took Harrison and Eagle townships from Ross, with 580 residents between the hills of Pigeon Fork and the Middle Fork of Salt Creek. The 1883 county history, writing of the sheep-raising farmers there, noted that Harrison had two churches, Disciples and United Brethren, no furnace, and the lowest personal-property valuation in the county, but that its population had still risen from 530 or 580 in 1850 to 1,172 in 1880.
