How Butler Township, Montgomery County began
Butler Township lies in the northern tier of Montgomery County, on the uplands between the Stillwater and Great Miami rivers, and was already a milling and distilling center by the 1830s. It has never incorporated as a single municipality; instead Vandalia and parts of Dayton and Union lie on land that was originally within its bounds, while Clayton and Englewood border it, so the township today is mostly what those places did not annex. It remains unincorporated, governed by a three-member board of trustees, with about 8,300 residents on 20 square miles as of the 2020 census. Its surviving landmarks are working-farm buildings — a Federal-style 1809 farmhouse and an 1868 brick farmhouse — rather than a town center, reflecting its history as farmland absorbed piecemeal by its municipal neighbors.
Settled 1802 (families from Randolph County, North Carolina, including George Sinks and Henry Yount, moved into the Stillwater settlement that year, following David Hoover and David Mast, who had prospected and settled just across the river in what became Randolph Township the year before), incorporated township formed October 7, 1817, from parts of Wayne and Randolph townships lying between the Miami River and Stillwater; first election held June 12, 1818 at the house of Sylvanus Swallow (66 votes cast; William Kennedy elected Justice of the Peace).
Where the name comes from
Butler Township is one of six townships in Ohio sharing the name; no source found for this specific township states who or what it was named for. The name is common across Ohio townships organized in the early 1800s, often honoring Revolutionary War general Richard Butler, but that link is not documented for this township specifically and is not asserted here.
Before the town
No source specific to Butler Township names a village, trail, mound or treaty boundary within its bounds. The township sits in the upland country between the Stillwater and Great Miami valleys, both corridors of documented Shawnee and Miami presence in the 1700s and within the region ceded at the Treaty of Greenville (1795).
Timeline
- — Martin Davenport and David Hoover, Sr., prospecting from North Carolina, first examined the Stillwater country around what became Union; Davenport died before reaching home, but in 1801 several North Carolina families including the Hoovers and David Mast made the trip and settled just across the river (in the future Randolph Township). John Quillan, a young man who had driven David Mast's team west, married Mast's daughter Obedience and settled on the Butler Township side of the river, entering the northeast quarter of Section 11; his son William is said to have been the first child born in the township. George Sinks and Henry Yount, from the same North Carolina neighborhood, settled in the township in 1802.
- — Butler Township was formed from parts of Wayne and Randolph townships lying between the Miami River and Stillwater. The first township election was held the following June 12 at the house of Sylvanus Swallow; sixty-six votes were cast and William Kennedy was elected Justice of the Peace. The township paid $123.87 1/2 in taxes that first year.

Stories
Settled from across the river
Butler Township's first settlers arrived almost as an afterthought to a settlement on the opposite bank. Around 1800, Martin Davenport and David Hoover, Sr., came from North Carolina's Stillwater-adjacent country looking for land, and though Davenport died before he could return home, Hoover's glowing report sent a wave of North Carolina families west the following year. Most of them settled across the Stillwater in what became Randolph Township -- but a young man named John Quillan, who had driven David Mast's wagon team out from North Carolina, married Mast's daughter Obedience soon after they arrived and struck out on his own, settling on the Butler Township side of the river. He spent the rest of his long life there, serving in the War of 1812 and raising a family; his son William is remembered in the 1882 county history as the first child born within the township's bounds. George Sinks and Henry Yount, from that same North Carolina neighborhood, followed in 1802, each entering large tracts on the north side of the river -- proof that Butler Township's earliest population was, quite literally, an offshoot of its neighbor's.
A township that never became a town
Butler Township is unusual among Montgomery County's early townships in that it never grew a courthouse square or a chartered village of its own. Over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the land within its original survey lines was claimed piece by piece by its neighbors: Dayton annexed territory on its southern edge, Vandalia grew into a city on township land, Englewood and Clayton into cities that border it, and part of the city of Union also sits on ground once organized as Butler Township. What remains unincorporated today is administered by a three-member board of trustees and a fiscal officer, the plain township government that has run it since Ohio's earliest years. Its 1833 industrial tally — five gristmills, four sawmills, a fulling mill, two tanneries, five distilleries and a woolen factory — shows it was a working farm-service township, not a sleepy backwater, even without a town of its own.
