How Gloria Glens Park began

Gloria Glens Park was established in 1924 as one of several cottage communities that grew up around Chippewa Lake during the resort boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, alongside neighboring Briarwood Beach and Chippewa-on-the-Lake. Tucked into the northeast corner of Westfield Township -- itself named for James Fowler, an early landed proprietor from Westfield, Massachusetts, who owned most of the future township east of Campbell's Creek -- the village grew from just 6 residents in 1940 to a peak of 538 by 2000 before declining somewhat in recent decades. It remains one of Medina County's smallest incorporated villages.

Incorporated 1924, by grew as a lakeside cottage community during the Chippewa Lake resort era, within Westfield Township (organized 1820).

Where the name comes from

No source we found explains the specific origin of the name Gloria Glens Park; it was one of several named cottage subdivisions -- alongside Briarwood Beach and Chippewa-on-the-Lake -- built up around Chippewa Lake as the area developed into a resort destination in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The surrounding township, Westfield, was named for James Fowler, a landed proprietor who owned about two-thirds of the township (the portion east of Campbell's Creek) and resided in Westfield, Massachusetts; the other proprietor, Henry Thorndyke of Portage County, held the remaining third to the creek's west but left no namesake behind.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, trail or documented encounter site specific to Gloria Glens Park itself turned up in the sources we found; the village was established in 1924 as a lakeside cottage community, more than a century after the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry opened Medina County to settlement. But the wider Westfield Township setting is documented: at the start of the 19th century, the banks of Campbell's Creek, which runs through the township's northwest, were the chosen home of a band of Indians the 1881 county history identifies as belonging to the "Wolf tribe," who ranged the surrounding forest on established trails and made regular trips to Chippewa Lake itself, combining hunting and trapping with what the county historian calls recreation, much as modern visitors would later travel to the same lake for leisure. The historic proprietors' land division ran along this same creek. The neighboring Chippewa Lake shoreline is where these trips centered.

Stories

A Cottage Colony That Outlasted the Resort

Gloria Glens Park began life not as a farm-township settlement like most of Medina County's older communities, but as a cottage subdivision -- one of several, including Briarwood Beach and Chippewa-on-the-Lake, that sprang up around the shores of Chippewa Lake as the area developed into a summer resort destination in the late 1800s and early 1900s. When the village formally incorporated in 1924, it was still tiny: the 1940 census counted just 6 residents, suggesting a community that for its first decades functioned more as a scattering of seasonal cottages than a year-round town. That changed as the 20th century wore on and lake-adjacent land became attractive for permanent homes rather than summer getaways; the village's population climbed steadily for decades, reaching a peak of 538 residents by 2000, even as the amusement park that had first drawn people to the lake closed in 1978. In the two decades since, Gloria Glens Park's population has eased back down to under 400 -- still, in its own quiet way, a living remnant of Chippewa Lake's resort-era boom.

Business and Pleasure at the Lake, a Century Before the Cottages

Long before Chippewa Lake drew summer cottagers, it drew a different kind of seasonal visitor. The 1881 county history records that a band of Indians it identifies as the Wolf tribe made the banks of Campbell's Creek, in the northwest of what became Westfield Township, their chosen base at the turn of the 19th century, and that a trip to Chippewa Lake was one of their favorite excursions -- an outing the historian describes, with evident sympathy, as combining business (hunting and trapping) with pleasure, not so differently from how later generations would travel to the same lake purely for recreation. The lake's pull on visitors, in other words, considerably predates the resort hotels and cottage villages, including Gloria Glens Park, that would eventually ring its shore.

Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
