How Gilboa began

Gilboa, laid out in 1837 in Blanchard Township and named for the biblical Mount Gilboa, incorporated in 1848 and kept a post office from 1843 until 1985. A cholera epidemic on August 6, 1852, traced to a damp, unsanitary cellar, killed thirteen residents and sent roughly 560 of the village's estimated 600 people fleeing in panic, including most of its doctors. The village's Main Street Historic District, including a former township hall of 1879, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Where the name comes from

The village is named after Mount Gilboa, a mountain in ancient Palestine referenced in the Bible.

The Cellar That Emptied a Village

On August 6, 1852, cholera broke out in Gilboa, traced by later accounts to unsanitary conditions in a damp cellar -- a plausible enough source, since cholera spreads through contaminated water and a poorly drained cellar in swamp-country Ohio was exactly the kind of place bacteria could breed unnoticed. What followed was not a contained outbreak but a rout. Thirteen residents died, a heavy toll for a village of only about 600 people, and the panic that followed emptied the town almost completely: some 560 people fled, leaving barely forty behind, and among the fleeing were most of Gilboa's own doctors -- the very people a stricken town most needed to stay. Nineteenth-century Americans did not yet understand that cholera traveled through water, not air, so flight would have felt like the only rational response available, even though it likely did little to protect people who might already have been exposed and may have spread the disease further along their escape routes. Gilboa recovered enough to incorporate and keep a post office running for another 133 years, but the summer of 1852 remains the single most dramatic entry in its recorded history.
