How Madison Township, Lake County began
Madison Township was first settled in 1802 by John Harper, and takes its name most likely from either President James Madison or the settlers' native Madison, Connecticut. Its eastern edge holds Unionville, an unincorporated crossroads community split between Madison Township and Ashtabula County's Harpersfield Township, where the Connecticut Land Company kept a land office and where a tavern built in 1798 grew into one of the busiest stagecoach stops on the Cleveland-Buffalo road -- and, by the 1840s, a documented Underground Railroad station. Today the township is a mostly rural, agricultural and vineyard community along Lake County's eastern edge.

Where the name comes from
The township's name most likely honors either President James Madison or Madison, Connecticut, the New England hometown of some of its settlers; it is one of twenty townships named Madison across Ohio.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail or site specific to Madison Township is documented in the sources consulted, beyond the general note that an old Native ridge trail along the higher ground later became the Cleveland-Buffalo Road (State Route 84) that runs through Unionville and past the Old Tavern site.
Timeline
- — A single-room log cabin is built at Unionville to serve travelers on an old ridge trail; it grows over the following decades into what becomes known as the Old Tavern or Unionville Tavern.

Dancing upstairs, hiding downstairs
The Old Tavern at Unionville started small: a single log room built in 1798 to shelter travelers on a ridge trail that Native people had used before the road came through. By 1818, with the Cleveland-Buffalo Road now a major stagecoach route, it had grown into a two-story saltbox inn, and it kept growing -- a covered carriage entrance, a ballroom, a grand second-floor parlor where dances ran late into the night. But the building lived a second life the dancers upstairs may not have known about: by the mid-1800s, its first floor and basement served as a station on the Underground Railroad, sheltering people escaping slavery before they continued on to the Lake Erie docks and across to Canada. Local tradition holds that tunnels ran from the tavern's cellar beneath the road itself to the Unionville cemetery. The tavern's best-remembered moment came in 1843, when the community rallied to protect Lewis and Milton Clarke from slave catchers who had tracked the brothers to the building -- an episode some local historians connect to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, published nine years later, and its character George Harris. The tavern operated in one form or another for more than two hundred years before closing to the public in 2006; a preservation society formed in 2011 now owns and is restoring it.
