How Cuyahoga Heights began

Cuyahoga Heights was part of Newburgh Township and then Newburgh Heights before a group of farmers led by Jesse W. Hammersley seceded in 1917-18 over rising taxes and building pressure, forming their own 4.5-square-mile industrial village. Its location along the Cuyahoga River, the New York Central Railroad, and later the interstate highway system drew major industry -- Ferro Corp, U.S. Steel, Republic Steel, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), and Benjamin Moore Paint among them -- and by 1967 the roughly 800 residents were largely Italian and Polish families who had arrived in the 1920s. Alcoa's Cleveland Works, built under the federal Heavy Press Program to secure US aerospace superiority after World War II, began operating an 8,000-ton, 87-foot-tall, 50,000-ton-capacity forging press on May 5, 1955 -- one of only two such presses in the country later named a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Incorporated 1917-18, seceding from Newburgh Heights; established 1918 as a 4.5-square-mile industrial suburb, by Jesse W. Hammersley, who led the farmer group behind the secession.

Where the name comes from

No source we reviewed explains why the seceding farmers chose the name Cuyahoga Heights specifically, beyond the obvious reference to the Cuyahoga River along the village's boundary.

Before the town

No source we reviewed identifies a specific, named Native American village, mound, or treaty site within present Cuyahoga Heights; the land was part of Newburgh Township, one of the Connecticut Land Company's original eighteen townships, ceded to the United States by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Stories

A Cold War press in a farm-secession village

Cuyahoga Heights exists because a group of farmers, led by Jesse W. Hammersley, decided in 1917-18 that they would rather run their own small industrial village than keep paying Newburgh Heights' rising taxes under its building pressure. What they built instead became, decades later, home to one of the most significant single machines in American Cold War industry: the Aluminum Company of America's Cleveland Works, built under the federal Heavy Press Program that Congress funded after World War II revealed Nazi Germany's advantage in heavy aircraft-part forging -- an advantage American planners feared the Soviet Union might now inherit. Alcoa's press, which began operating on May 5, 1955, weighs 8,000 tons, stands 87 feet tall, and can forge aluminum and magnesium aircraft components under 50,000 tons of force; it is one of only two American presses of its kind later designated a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, standing today in a village that started out as a farmers' tax revolt.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Cuyahoga Heights, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,914 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
