How Chippewa Township, Wayne County began

Chippewa Township is one of sixteen townships in Wayne County and the only township of that name in Ohio, taking its name from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) nation. It covers about 36 square miles in the county's northwest corner and contains the village of Doylestown, founded in 1827 by William Doyle at the crossing of two Native American trails, along with parts of Marshallville and Rittman. Beyond the founding of Doylestown, the township's own documented history is thin: it remains largely agricultural, and its two genuine National Register listings are farm-era buildings, the Zimmerman Octagon House and the Gish Farmhouses.

Settled 1813 (Thomas Frederick, first homestead at the future Doylestown), incorporated 1815-09-04, by Wayne County commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Named for the Ojibwe (Chippewa) nation; no local naming rationale is recorded beyond the nation's name itself, and it is the only Chippewa Township in Ohio.

Before the town

The township is named for the Ojibwe (Chippewa) nation, one of the twelve nations party to the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, though no Ojibwe settlement within this township is recorded, and Ojibwe presence in Ohio is generally recorded in the northwest of the state rather than here; the name appears to be commemorative rather than a marker of a local Ojibwe community. The township's one site-specific Native American record is at Doylestown, in the township's north: William Doyle laid out the village's 40 lots in 1827 at the crossing of two Native American trails on a hilltop, meaning the town's very location was inherited from a pre-existing indigenous travel route, though neither trail is named.

Nations recorded here: Ojibwe (Chippewa).

Stories

A town platted on a trail crossing

When William Doyle purchased 50 acres in the township's north in 1827 and laid out a 40-lot village, he did not choose an arbitrary hilltop: the site sat where two Native American trails crossed, a location already selected by generations of travelers before any Euro-American survey. Surveyor Charles Christmas platted the lots on December 9, 1827, and recorded the survey on Christmas Day. Five of Doyle's friends from Pennsylvania soon joined him, and the settlement that grew up around the old trail crossing became Doylestown, which by 1896 had passed 1,000 residents on the strength of a local coal boom that also touched the surrounding township.

Old Henry Franks, captive

Henry Franks, known as Old Henry, born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, settled in Chippewa Township in 1816 or 1817 on a farm south of Doylestown and had five sons and six daughters. According to the 1878 county history, he had been taken prisoner by Indians on the Ohio River as a young man, a tall and powerful man whom his captors fancied. They adopted him by ceremonies, the first condition of which was to run the gauntlet; to save his own life he struck an Indian with his hatchet and nearly killed him, which made the Indians exclaim that he made a good Indian. They nursed him through his wound. He was a witness to the capture and horrible death of Crawford in Ohio, and then made his escape to the lake shore, boarded a British vessel, went by water to Montreal, crossed to the American side and made his way on foot to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and home to Fayette County after five years of captivity. The history says his life supplies a field for the writer of border romance.
