How Rittman began

Rittman, in Milton Township at the northern edge of Wayne County, began as farms taken up from 1814 by William Doyle, John Coleman and Martin Fritz. The town itself began in 1869, when a railroad stop called Milton Station got its first house and, in 1870, its first store and post office. The post office was renamed Ellio in 1879, Arkona in 1880 and Rittman in 1881, the last for a railroad treasurer, Frederick B. Rittman. Salt found in 1897 brought the Wayne Salt Company (later Ohio Salt, then Morton Salt) and E. J. Young's Ohio Boxboard Company followed in 1903. Rittman had 6,131 residents in 2020 and is the site of the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.

Settled 1814 (William Doyle and John Coleman took title to land on July 23, 1814; Martin Fritz settled in Milton Township in June 1814), platted 1869-70 (as Milton Station; the plat date is not given in the sources checked), by Settlers William Doyle, John Coleman and Martin Fritz (1814); the railroad stop of 1869 was started by David Shook, who built its first house.

Where the name comes from

The city's own history page says Rittman was named for Fred (Frederick B.) Rittman, treasurer of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, after the earlier name 'Arkona' was dropped because it was too like Akron, and lists the earlier names Ellio, Milton Station and New Prospect. The post office record fits the sequence of names (Milton Station 1870, Ellio 1879, Arkona 1880, Rittman from 1881), but not the city's account of the B&O station: the city says the station opened in 1888, yet the post office had been called Rittman since 1881. A news item surfaced in a search attributes the name to the treasurer of the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio (later Erie) railroad instead; that article was not opened, so which railroad Frederick B. Rittman served is left open.

Before the town

No mound, village or treaty event is recorded at the site of Rittman itself. The earliest Milton Township accounts do record Native people close by. Douglass (1878) says the first settler, in 1813, was Isaac De Courcey, 'perceptibly possessed of Indian blood,' who lived on the later Knupp farm with his wife and two children, hunting and fishing, and left for Allen County in seven or eight years. Phillip Fritz, who came with his father in 1814, remembered hunting with Native men, who came to the Fritz house to trade venison for corn, and said there were 'a good many Indians about,' who 'called themselves Delawares, Shawanese and Wyandots,' with a town of perhaps thirty families on the south side of Chippewa Lake (in Medina County). He added that an Indian was found shot in the drift near where River Styx meets the Chippewa, and that about then the Native people 'got scared and very suddenly disappeared.' Fritz's account was given to the 1878 historian some sixty years later. Across Wayne County, the record names the Delaware (Lenape), Wyandot and Shawnee and three recorded trails.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee, Wyandot.

  • Native town on the south side of Chippewa Lake (as remembered by Phillip Fritz) (village) — south shore of Chippewa Lake, Medina County, a day's hunting trip north of Milton Township, about 1814-1820, as remembered in 1878 (archive.org)
  • Burial of a shot man in the drift near the mouth of River Styx (burial) — within about ten rods of where River Styx (the north branch of the Chippewa) enters the Big Chippewa, Milton Township, about 1814-1820, undated (archive.org)

Timeline

  1. — Isaac De Courcey, a man of Native descent, is living with his wife and two children on what is later the Knupp farm, the first settler in Milton Township.
  2. — On July 23 William Doyle and John Coleman take title to land in the area, and Martin Fritz moves in the previous month; eight families buy land within a month, according to the city.
  3. — William Doyle teaches the first school, in a log shanty where the Knupp church later stands; Sarah Fritz and her son Adam are the first deaths and are buried in the Knupp graveyard.
  4. — On October 5 the county commissioners organize Milton Township, after settler Jacob Kiefer's suggestion of 'Center Swamp Township' is turned down by Commissioner George Bair as an insult to the place.
  5. — David Shook builds the first house at Milton Station, on a corner of the quarter section that William Elliott transferred to his brother Thomas in 1829; the village is platted there.
  6. — In July C. M. Murdock opens the first business at Milton Station, and the post office is moved there from Shinersburg (New Prospect); Solomon Hann is the first postmaster, and Murdock is appointed on March 26, 1872.
  7. — On March 11 the boiler of Knupp & Co.'s sawmill near Shinersburg explodes and kills seven men.
  8. — The Milton Station post office is renamed Ellio.
  9. — The post office is renamed Arkona.
  10. — The post office takes the name Rittman, which it has kept since.
  11. — The Lake Shore and Tuscarawas Railroad, later the B&O, opens a station in the town, according to the city's history.
  12. — Salt deposits found at Rittman lead to the founding of the Wayne Salt Company, later the Ohio Salt Company.
  13. — E. J. Young, who started the salt company, forms the Ohio Boxboard Company to package his salt and matches.
  14. — A private bank, the Rittman Savings Bank, is established in October.
  15. — Population recorded at 1,803.
  16. — The Ohio Salt Company merges with and takes the name of the Morton Salt Company.
  17. — Ohio Boxboard is acquired by the Packaging Corporation of America and later becomes Rittman Paperboard.
  18. — The Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, the second national cemetery in Ohio, is dedicated at Rittman.
  19. — Rittman Paperboard closes in early 2006, once employing over 1,200.
  20. — In October the national cemetery buys the adjoining Rawiga Country Club, adding about 150 acres for a total near 423.

Stories

Milton Station, Ellio, Arkona, Rittman

Shortly after the Civil War the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad (later the Erie) made a stop in the north end of Milton Township, and it was simply Milton Station: David Shook put up the first house in 1869, C. M. Murdock opened the first business in July 1870 and the post office was moved there from Shinersburg, the crossroads said to be named for the grocer Michael Hatfield, who in a drunken moment declared he would 'shine as bright as anybody' in heaven. From there the post office changed its name three times in two years: Ellio in 1879, Arkona in 1880, and in 1881 Rittman, after a railroad treasurer, Frederick B. Rittman. The city's account says Arkona was dropped for being too much like Akron. The story that the B&O named the station after Rittman in 1888 does not agree with the post office, which was already Rittman seven years earlier, so the town's own telling and the postal dates disagree.

Seven men and a sawmill boiler

On Friday afternoon, March 11, 1870, the steam boiler of Knupp & Co.'s sawmill near Shinersburg in Milton Township exploded and killed seven men. Jacob Knupp, John Fritz and the brothers Lewis and David Hoover had been running the mill; Robert McConnell, his son Frank, and a carpenter named David Shook, who were building a house a few rods west, had sheltered inside when rain came on. Less than ten minutes later the boiler let go. All were killed instantly except David Hoover, who lived a few hours. The 1878 county history names a David Shook as builder of the first house at Milton Station in 1869; whether it was the same man it does not say.

Salt, matches and boxboard

Rittman's twentieth-century growth came from what was under it. Salt deposits found in 1897 led to the Wayne Salt Company, which became the Ohio Salt Company and, in 1948, the Morton Salt Company. E. J. Young, who started the salt company and made matches at nearby Wadsworth, needed boxes for both products and formed the Ohio Boxboard Company in 1903. It was bought by the Packaging Corporation of America in 1965, later became Rittman Paperboard with more than 1,200 workers, and closed in early 2006; the salt plant, now Morton's, is still among the city's larger employers. The city counted 1,803 people in 1920 and 6,491 in 2010.

Phillip Fritz and the Indians at Chippewa Lake

Phillip Fritz was ten when his father, Martin, a Revolutionary veteran who had once been sold in New York to pay his passage, cut a road into Milton Township in 1814. Bears, wolves and wild hogs were plenty, and Native hunters traded venison for corn at the Fritz door. Once he went with Samuel and John Fritz, Isaac De Courcey and John Huffman to hunt at Chippewa Lake and was left to mind the food when eight Native men walked up, laid down their knives, guns and tomahawks beside his big fire, and told him in English that a white man was foolish to build a big fire and sit away from it: an Indian made a small fire and sat close. They jumped on muskrat houses to kill the animals as they came out, and when a beaver bolted from the largest one they killed it, whooped and danced. Fritz remembered the town on the lake's south side, perhaps thirty families, and that the Native people vanished suddenly after an Indian was found shot in the drift by River Styx.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Rittman, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,628 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
