How Belpre Township, Washington County began
Belpre Township occupies the southwestern corner of Washington County along the Ohio River, taking its name from the Belle Prairie ('beautiful meadow') that early French traders named before American settlement. Its river hamlet, Little Hocking, took root around a house built in 1798 -- reputedly the first permanent structure in the township -- and grew slowly around a post office (1824) and later plat (1875). The short-lived post office of Armenia served the township's back country from 1887 to 1915. The 2020 census recorded 3,897 residents; the city of Belpre, in the township's southeast corner, is documented separately.

Where the name comes from
Named for Belle Prairie, French for 'beautiful meadow,' the name French trappers had given the valley before American settlement; the township's Little Hocking community takes its own name from the Little Hocking River.
Before the town
No village, mound or treaty site specific to Belpre Township was found in the sources checked. The Curtis family's own arrival illustrates the frontier conflict directly: they first settled at Marietta in 1791, in the middle of the Northwest Indian War, and only moved out to farm the ground that became this township in 1795, the year the Treaty of Greenville ended the fighting and made outlying settlement here possible.

Stories
One family, two houses, thirty years apart
Ebenezer Curtis brought his family to Marietta in 1791, in the thick of the Northwest Indian War, and moved them out to farm southwest of the city only after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville made it safe to settle beyond the stockades. He put up an early log house on the new farm; his son Walter, born in Connecticut in 1787, later built a much grander Greek Revival brick house on the same ground in 1827, once he had prospered as a county commissioner, associate judge, and state representative, and as a keelboat freight operator running goods to Pittsburgh, Charleston and Cincinnati with his brother Horace. That brick house stayed in Curtis family hands into the 1920s and stands today as one of southeastern Ohio's best-preserved early Greek Revival farmhouses -- a rare case of two generations' worth of a single family's rise visible in one piece of ground.
The first house at Little Hocking
In 1798, only a decade after the Ohio Company's first landing at Marietta, Nathaniel Sawyer built a weatherboarded log house at the mouth of the Little Hocking River -- reputed to be the very first permanent structure raised anywhere in Belpre Township. The house did more than shelter a family: over the years it also served the growing river settlement as its post office and store. A post office formally opened at Little Hocking in 1824, but the settlement itself was not platted as a town until 1875, more than fifty years later, a reminder that in this stretch of the Ohio River valley, farms and trading posts often came generations before anyone got around to drawing a town plat.
