How Beachwood began

Beachwood was part of Warrensville Township until a dispute over a school closure led residents to petition for independence, incorporating as its own village on June 26, 1915; the name, for the beech trees once common there, is popularly said to have been misspelled 'Beachwood' by an early village clerk and to have stuck. It became a city in 1960. From 1948 to 1957 Beachwood was the site of a bitter, openly antisemitic fight over the Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple's plan to build on 32 acres in the village -- opposed by an all-non-Jewish village council and by circulated white-supremacist literature -- which the Ohio Supreme Court settled in 1954 by ordering the village to permit construction; the temple opened in 1957 and the episode helped establish Beachwood's later identity as a center of Cleveland's Jewish community. Industrialist Dudley S. Blossom's 1936 Art Deco recreation building, The Hangar, designed with his wife Elizabeth and built by Abraham Garfield (son of President James Garfield), remains one of the city's architectural landmarks in a Cleveland suburb of about 14,000.

Incorporated 1915-06-26 (village); 1960 (city), by Warrensville Township residents who petitioned to separate.

Where the name comes from

Beachwood was named for the numerous beech trees once common in the area, and was originally spelled 'Beechwood'; one popular local theory holds that an early village hall clerk misspelled the name on official documents, and the altered spelling, 'Beachwood,' stuck.

Before the town

No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Beachwood. The area lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories

The synagogue the village tried to block

When Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple bought 32 acres in Beachwood in 1948 to build a synagogue for 1,800 families, the small, then almost entirely non-Jewish suburb reacted with organized hostility rather than the ordinary friction of a zoning dispute. By 1952 Beachwood's village council -- no member of it Jewish -- had formally declared the project 'detrimental to the public safety, welfare, and convenience of the village,' and that May, after the congregation threatened to sue, residents found a white-supremacist newspaper called The Plain Truth in their mailboxes warning that 'the battle is on... Let not the Jew plan succeed.' The fight went to the Ohio Supreme Court, which ruled in 1954 that the village had to permit construction and issue the necessary permits; the temple finally opened its doors in 1957. Rather than ending Jewish presence in Beachwood, the episode marked something like the opposite turning point -- the years that followed brought a substantial and lasting Jewish migration into the suburb, reshaping the same community that had fought so hard to keep the congregation out.

A steel magnate's private gymkhana

Dudley S. Blossom, a Cleveland industrialist and philanthropist, wanted a private indoor place to swim and play tennis year-round, and in 1936 he got one: The Hangar, an Art Deco recreation building on Cedar Road designed with his wife Elizabeth and built by architect Abraham Garfield, son of President James A. Garfield -- Garfield's only known work in the Art Deco style. The building belongs to a rare category, a 1930s 'gymkhana' sporting pavilion, of which only about two dozen are known to survive nationally, and it kept its original murals and artisan metalwork remarkably intact through the mid-20th century. By the 1980s the building needed real restoration, which fell to Blossom family descendant Charles Bolton, who preserved the original art and design rather than modernizing it away. Nearly ninety years after Blossom built it, the same Blossom family name still marks Beachwood's built landscape -- not only in The Hangar itself but in the nearby subdivision and estate service compound the family developed, both separately listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Beachwood, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

52,726 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
