About this area's water
Did you know
- Piketon's old plant had no softening at all, and Ohio EPA reported that some residents were spending upwards of $40 a month on private household water softeners - so the new plant was built partly to make those private units unnecessary.
- The village financed the roughly $8M plant with a zero-percent Ohio EPA loan plus up to $3,994,717 in disadvantaged-community principal forgiveness - about half the project cost - saving an estimated $9,930,000 over a 30-year term versus the 4.08% market rate.
- Piketon's own 2025 water report voluntarily itemizes its past reporting failures from 2017 through 2020, including the year it left an individual lead result of 19.5 ppb - over the action level - out of the published report.
- The 1972 pipe connecting Piketon to Pike Water, Inc. was built so Pike Water could buy Piketon's water. The flow has since reversed: it is now the emergency line through which Pike Water rescues Piketon.
- Ohio EPA seriously evaluated simply abandoning Piketon's plant and buying water from Pike Water instead, but rejected it - partly because Pike Water does not soften its water either, so the hardness complaint driving the whole project would have gone unfixed.

History6
- 1953Piketon's water treatment plant was constructed at 224 West Second Street.
- 1972Interconnection built between Piketon and Pike Water, Inc., originally so that Pike Water could purchase water from Piketon. It now functions in the opposite direction, as an emergency connection through which Pike Water supplies Piketon.
- 1973The water treatment plant received various process upgrades.
- 1986The 300,000-gallon single-pedestal Lucas Street Water Tower was constructed, serving downtown Piketon and the fairgrounds area.
- 2007The water treatment plant received electrical and control upgrades.
- 2013The 400,000-gallon glass-lined bolted-steel Pike Hill standpipe was constructed at the end of Skyline Drive, serving residents east of US Highway 23.

Daily production in 2025 averaged about 503,000 gallons.

Planned or needed
- New Piketon wastewater treatment plant · planned
Ohio EPA's 2023 Environmental Assessment states the new WTP and a future WWTP will be built on the same Piketon Road site, so that treatment byproduct can be conveyed conveniently to the WWTP for treatment and discharge; the Phase I archaeology survey covered the combined water and wastewater plant site.

Supply stress
Ohio EPA's source water assessment rates the Teays River Valley Aquifer supplying Piketon's three wells (average depth 70 feet) as having a high susceptibility to contamination, due to the sensitive nature of the aquifer and the potential contaminant sources identified - with the standard caveat that this describes conditions, not actual contamination.
