Downtown Columbus in 1887, from the Sanborn fire insurance maps at the Library of Congress. The Sanborn company drew every building for insurers: pink for brick, yellow for wood, blue for stone. Swipe to today and the grid is the same, the Statehouse square is the same, and most of those buildings are gone. All 29 sheets of the 1887 Columbus set are on our map, lined up with the ground.
