Life expectancy across Ohio

1,201 of 1,233 Ohio ZIP codes have a figure; the median one has 77.9 years.

Life expectancy in Ohio varies more from one ZIP code to the next than Ohio varies from most other states, and the gap between the longest-lived and shortest-lived places can run well over a decade. The pattern tracks income, insurance coverage, smoking rates and access to care more closely than it tracks geography for its own sake, though it often clusters by neighborhood.

This lists both ends: the 25 Ohio ZIP codes or tracts with the longest average life expectancy at birth, and, separately, the 25 with the shortest, from the CDC's small-area life expectancy estimates. A single figure describes everyone born into a place on average, not any one resident's prospects.

How this was measured

The CDC's small-area life expectancy project estimated life expectancy at birth for every census tract from deaths in 2010 to 2015 and the 2010 census; the map weights the 2010 tracts into each ZIP by its 2020 block population and the card shows the spread across the ZIP's tracts. It is the average number of years a newborn would live if the tract's death rates of that period held for life, so a poor inner-city ZIP and a wealthy suburb ten miles apart can differ by fifteen years. The estimates are a decade old and carry standard errors of one to two years in small tracts.

1,201 of 1,233 ZIP codes have a figure; ZIP codes without one are left off the list, not counted as zero. Ties are broken by ZIP code.

Every ZIP code's own page carries the full detail behind its figure, and the Life expectancy topic page ranks the whole state.
