How Willowick began

Willowick grew up along what is now Lake Shore Boulevard, a road that began as a Native American trail along the Lake Erie bluff before it became a corridor for Cleveland-area interurban rail traffic starting in 1897. Voters approved village incorporation on November 6, 1923, taking effect in 1924 under the name Willowick -- a portmanteau of neighboring Willoughby and Wickliffe -- with George Mills, a Case Institute of Technology professor, as first mayor. The community reached city status in 1957 after postwar growth pushed its population past 5,000. Automobile inventor and philanthropist Claud Foster built his lakefront home here in 1916, and the house remains Willowick's sole individual National Register listing.

Incorporated 1924 (village, following a November 6, 1923 vote); city status January 1, 1957, by George Mills, first mayor.

Where the name comes from

Willowick's name is a portmanteau combining the names of its two neighboring communities, Willoughby and Wickliffe.

Before the town

Willowick's own city history records that the area was used as hunting and trading ground by Erie, Wyandot, Delaware (Lenape), Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa and Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) people, and that Lake Shore Boulevard -- the road along which the community grew -- began as a Native trail used to travel and trade with distant tribes. No named village or archaeological site within present Willowick is documented in the sources consulted.

Nations recorded here: Erie, Wyandot, Delaware (Lenape), Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa, Iroquois (Haudenosaunee).

Stories

The inventor's cottage on Lake Shore Boulevard

Claud Hanscomb Foster made his fortune from two automobile inventions built almost entirely on mechanical intuition: the 'Gabriel' horn of 1904, a multi-tone horn powered by engine exhaust that Cleveland's own mayor once stopped by Foster's shop to admire, and the 'Snubber,' the first commercially successful shock absorber, which he sketched after watching a deckhand secure a docking ship with rope wound in a figure eight. By 1920 Foster's company was selling roughly three-quarters of the shock absorbers sold anywhere in the world, and in 1916, at the height of his success, he bought eight lakefront acres in what was then sparsely settled Willoughby Township summer-resort country and built himself a substantial stucco Bungalow-style house with a putting green on the hill behind it, where he said he improved his short game by pitching balls over his own roof. Foster sold his company in 1925 for four million dollars, and after retiring gave nearly all of it away -- $3.9 million distributed to nine Cleveland hospitals, six orphanages and Western Reserve University in a single dinner in 1952, plus, from 1958 on, hundreds of pipe organs donated to small-town Ohio churches he would personally visit to see dedicated. He died in 1965, at ninety-two, still remembered in his hometown papers as 'a great giver with a common touch.' His Willowick house, sold out of the Foster family decades ago, remains standing much as he built it.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Willowick, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,916 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
