How Eastlake began

Eastlake occupies the Lake Erie shore of old Willoughby Township around the mouth of the Chagrin River, where Connecticut Land Company surveyor Charles Parker built what the 1878 county history calls the first house in the county in 1796. Settlers from New York bought lakeshore land in the 1830s, Clevelanders began building summer homes in the 1880s, and the Cleveland, Painesville and Eastern interurban brought more visitors from 1897. Eastlake incorporated as a village in 1948, taking a name that describes its place northeast of Cleveland on the lake, and became a city in 1951. Its postwar growth was rapid, and on August 14, 2003, a FirstEnergy generating unit here went offline at the start of the largest blackout in North American history.

Settled 1830s (settlers from New York State buy lakeshore land from the Connecticut Land Company), incorporated 1948 (village); city in 1951.

Where the name comes from

Eastlake takes its name from its geography: it sits northeast of Cleveland along the shore of Lake Erie, and the name was chosen simply to describe that position rather than to honor a person or transplant a Connecticut place name, unlike many older Western Reserve towns.

Before the town

The city's own history states that more than three hundred years ago the Erie had a village near what is now Lake Shore Boulevard and Reeves Road, and that a French trading post named Charlton stood at the mouth of the Chagrin River about 1750; neither claim cites an archaeological report, and the 1878 county history records 'Charlton' only as the first name given to the surveyed township. The river's own name has a trade-era origin: the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History says it appears as the Elk on Lewis Evans's 1755 map, was called the Shaguin after a French trader, Sieur de Saguin, and was written 'Chagrin' by surveyor Seth Pease in 1797. The land passed to the Connecticut Land Company under the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Erie.

Timeline

  1. — Lewis Evans's map shows the river at present Eastlake as the Elk; it is later called the Shaguin after a French trader and anglicized to Chagrin by Seth Pease's 1797 survey map.
  2. — Surveyor Charles Parker, working for the Connecticut Land Company, builds a house and several huts at the mouth of the Chagrin River, recorded as the first house in the township and probably in the county.
  3. — David Abbott of Brookfield, Massachusetts, a Yale-educated lawyer who as Trumbull County sheriff presided at the Western Reserve's first election in 1800, becomes the first permanent settler of the township first titled Charlton and then Chagrin.
  4. — Settlers from New York State buy lakeshore land from the Connecticut Land Company at $7 to $10 an acre.
  5. — Chagrin Township is renamed Willoughby in honor of Professor Willoughby of Herkimer County, New York; it belongs to Cuyahoga County until Lake County is formed in 1840.
  6. — Wealthy Clevelanders begin building summer homes along the lakeshore.
  7. — The Cleveland, Painesville and Eastern shoreline interurban streetcar line brings more visitors to the lake.
  8. — Conrad and Jessie Albracht build a summer home, at a cost of $22,043, on land from Erie Road along Lake Shore to Willowick Drive that later becomes the site of Eastlake's city hall.
  9. — Eastlake incorporates as a village.
  10. — The new village has a population of about 4,700.
  11. — Eastlake becomes a city, with a population of 7,486.
  12. — The city buys the Albracht building and land for $50,000.
  13. — Eastlake and Willoughby form a joint sanitary sewer district.
  14. — Population reaches 12,467, a 165.3 percent increase over 1950 as postwar suburban growth accelerates along the lakeshore.
  15. — The U.S. Supreme Court rules in Eastlake's favor that a proposed zoning change may be put to a vote of the people.
  16. — Eastlake's population peaks at 21,954.
  17. — A new city hall is built at 35150 Lakeshore Boulevard and the old one is moved across the street.
  18. — On August 14, a FirstEnergy generating plant in Eastlake goes offline at 1:31 p.m. amid high electrical demand, a trigger for the largest blackout in North American history, which cuts power to roughly 50 million people across eight U.S. states and parts of southeastern Canada.

Stories

The afternoon a power plant here dimmed eight states

At 1:31 in the afternoon on August 14, 2003, a generating unit at the FirstEnergy plant on Eastlake's Lake Erie shoreline went offline under the strain of a hot, high-demand summer day. What followed was not a local outage: as the regional power grid struggled to compensate, cascading failures spread across the interconnected system, and within hours some 50 million people across eight U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario had lost electricity in the largest blackout in North American history. Traffic lights failed, subways stopped between stations, and people in cities hundreds of miles from Eastlake spent the night without power -- all traced, in the investigations that followed, back to the moment this small Lake County plant went dark.

The first house at the river mouth

In 1796, the year the Connecticut Land Company's surveyors began laying out the Western Reserve, surveyor Charles Parker built a house at the mouth of the Chagrin River and a number of huts for the company's use. The 1878 History of Geauga and Lake Counties calls it the first house erected in the township and the first in the county. Parker himself came and went: the same history says he returned to the river mouth in August 1798 to survey, gave that up, and by 1804 had settled with his brother Clark at Hopkins' Point in Mentor before moving to Norwalk in 1814. The settlers the 1878 history names for the following years took up land along the river above the village and on the Genesee ridge; the city's own history dates the first lakeshore land sales to New York settlers to the 1830s and its summer-home era to the 1880s.

56,914 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
