How Wickliffe began

Wickliffe's first residents, the William Jones and Abner C. Tarbell families, arrived from Haddam, Connecticut in 1817 and settled on a knoll near what is now Lloyd Road and Euclid Avenue. A post office named for U.S. Postmaster General Charles A. Wickliffe opened in 1843, and the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad reached the area in 1852. The town incorporated as a village in 1916 with Great Lakes shipping magnate Harry Coulby, who had just built a million-dollar mansion here, as its first mayor; Wickliffe became a city in 1951 and today holds Coulby's former estate as its city hall.

Settled 1817 (William Jones and Abner C. Tarbell families), incorporated March 27, 1916 (village, by a 119-vote margin); city status October 6, 1951, by William Jones and Abner C. Tarbell.

Where the name comes from

Wickliffe is named for Charles A. Wickliffe, the 11th United States Postmaster General, following the establishment of a post office under that name in 1843.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail or site specific to present Wickliffe is documented in the sources consulted; the city lies within the area opened to settlement by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville and within the broader range used by Whittlesey-culture villagers before about 1650 and by Seneca, Wyandot, Ottawa and other nations afterward -- the same general pattern documented for neighboring Willowick, whose city history records Erie, Wyandot, Delaware, Chippewa, Ottawa and Iroquois use of the Lake Shore Boulevard corridor.

Timeline

  1. — The William Jones and Abner C. Tarbell families, from Haddam, Connecticut, become Wickliffe's first settlers, buying land near present Lloyd Road and Euclid Avenue for about $5 an acre.
  2. — The first U.S. post office branch opens on July 3, with Silas A. Vorce as postmaster, giving the community its permanent name.
  3. — The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad (later the New York Central) reaches the area, replacing stagecoaches as the main means of transportation.
  4. — Great Lakes shipping executive Harry Coulby builds a Renaissance Revival mansion, later called Coulallenby, on 54 acres, at a cost of more than $1 million.
  5. — Wickliffe incorporates as a village on March 27 by a vote of 119 in favor; Harry Coulby becomes its first mayor.
  6. — Harry Coulby dies in London on January 18; his estate distributes over $3.2 million to charity, including a $3 million gift credited with helping save the Cleveland Foundation during the Great Depression.
  7. — Wickliffe becomes a city on October 6, its population having reached 5,002.
  8. — The city purchases the former Coulby mansion to serve as Wickliffe's city hall, after an interlude as a Catholic girls' school.

Stories

From an English farm boy to 'Czar of the Great Lakes'

Harry Coulby left school at eleven, worked as a telegraph operator on British railways, and crossed the Atlantic in 1884 after a bout of malaria in Cuba convinced him to see the Great Lakes he had read about -- he reportedly walked much of the 600 miles from New York to Cleveland to get there. He took a $50-a-month secretarial job with the shipping firm Pickands Mather in 1886 and never really left the business again: by 1903 he ran U.S. Steel's entire Great Lakes shipping fleet, redesigned the standard ore carrier in a form the industry used for the next 65 years, and earned the nickname 'Czar of the Great Lakes' for how completely he came to dominate it. He was also a hard-edged employer who fought unionization for decades. In 1911 Coulby began building himself a Renaissance Revival mansion on 54 acres of what was then still countryside east of Cleveland, finished by 1915 with Italian marble fireplaces and Tiffany skylights; when the surrounding community incorporated as Wickliffe in 1916, its residents made Coulby their first mayor. He died in a London hotel in 1929, on his way to a Caribbean cruise, having quietly willed $3 million to the Cleveland Foundation -- a gift that arrived just in time to help the young charity survive the Great Depression that began that same year. His mansion still stands, serving today as Wickliffe's city hall.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Wickliffe, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,916 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
