How Willoughby began

Willoughby's first permanent settler, David Abbott, arrived in 1798 and built a gristmill on a river the local Native people called Sha-ga-rin, or 'clear water' -- later renamed the Chagrin. The settlement took its permanent name in 1835 for Westel Willoughby, Jr., a public-health official whom the founders of a short-lived local medical college hoped to attract to the area; the medical college itself did not last, but the name did. Willoughby holds the unusual distinction of having belonged, over its history, to six different Ohio counties before settling into Lake County, and today is a Cleveland-area suburb whose downtown retains a notable stock of nineteenth-century buildings.

Settled 1798 (David Abbott, first permanent settler), incorporated 1835 (renamed and chartered as Willoughby), by David Abbott.

Where the name comes from

The town was renamed Willoughby in 1835 for Westel Willoughby, Jr., a public health official; the founders of a medical college established in the town at the time hoped invoking his name would help attract students and legitimacy to the fledgling institution. The college did not endure, but the name stuck.

Before the town

The Chagrin River, which runs through Willoughby, carried a Native name before European settlement: local tradition recorded by Wikipedia's Willoughby article holds that Native people called it 'Sha-ga-rin,' meaning 'clear water,' which English speakers eventually corrupted into 'Chagrin.' No other Native village, trail or site specific to Willoughby is documented in the sources consulted. Lake County's broader Native history includes the documented Whittlesey-culture earthwork at Indian Point in neighboring LeRoy Township.

Stories

A town that changed counties six times

Few Ohio towns have as unsettled an administrative history as Willoughby. Because it sits near the corner where several county lines met and shifted during Ohio's early statehood, Willoughby has at various times belonged to Washington, Jefferson, Trumbull, Geauga, Cuyahoga and finally Lake counties -- a distinction its own historical record calls unique among American towns. The shifting borders reflect how unsettled the Connecticut Western Reserve's internal boundaries still were in the decades after the 1796 survey: as the Reserve filled with settlers, the Ohio legislature kept redrawing county lines to keep county seats within reach of a day's travel by horse, and Willoughby, sitting on the Chagrin River between the growing lake ports, kept ending up on the wrong side of the latest line.

Cleveland money on Euclid Avenue

In the early twentieth century, wealthy Cleveland families built dozens of sprawling country estates across Lake County's western townships, and Willoughby held its share. Joseph and Julia Boyce completed their estate on Euclid Avenue in 1902; after Julia's death in 1903 it passed to her daughter Nancy and son-in-law Albert Hapgood Van Gorder, a pharmaceutical executive, who owned it for more than half a century. Most of Lake County's comparable estates -- with names like Mooreland and Kingwood Farm in Mentor, Hilo Farms and Playmore in Kirtland, Nagirroc and Elmhurst in Wickliffe -- were eventually demolished or converted to institutional and public use as the twentieth century wore on and the great fortunes that built them thinned out; the Boyce estate's survival into the National Register in 2023 makes it one of the more intact reminders of that era.

Mostly estimated. Only 7% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Willoughby - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,916 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
