How West Leipsic began
West Leipsic began life, confusingly, under the name Leipsic when platted in 1852, while the village that keeps that name today was then called Roanoke; the two villages effectively swapped names before West Leipsic incorporated in 1882. It lies in Liberty Township.
Settled 1850, platted 1852, incorporated 1882, by John W. Peckenpaugh, who purchased the site in 1850; first surveyed by Samuel Parker, county surveyor.
Where the name comes from
When platted in 1852, the settlement was itself called Leipsic, while the village today known as Leipsic bore the name Roanoke; the two names were later swapped, leaving this village as West Leipsic. Putnam County's 1915 history, written after the swap, already calls the village West Leipsic and does not mention the earlier name or the swap itself.

Timeline
- — Liberty Township is organized in April; Alexander Montooth was its first settler in 1835, and settlement clusters on a slightly elevated strip called the Ridge because the land is so swampy.
- — Judge Palmer lays out the village of Medary in Liberty Township and builds a combined grist and saw mill, a frame building with the grist mill above the saw mill; the site later became cornfields.
- — John W. Peckenpaugh purchases the land where West Leipsic now stands, and county surveyor Samuel Parker makes the first survey of twenty lots; John Shakely builds the first house, later used for years as a hotel and drug store.
- — The village is platted under the name Leipsic, while the neighboring village later known as Leipsic was then called Roanoke.
- — Louisa M. Lowry, daughter of storekeeper and first justice of the peace J. J. Lowry, is born -- the first white child born in the village; she later marries Dr. Samuel Emery, the town's first physician.
- — Second and third surveys in 1853-54 extend the platted land north of the Nickel Plate railroad line, completing the town's original layout.
- — The swamps and ponds of Liberty Township are drained and tiled, after which sickness in the township greatly decreases.
- — West Leipsic incorporates as an Ohio village, with R. Haskell as its first mayor, by which point the two villages' names had been swapped to their present form.
- — The earliest census recorded for West Leipsic shows 502 residents.
- — The village's population is recorded at 253.
Stories
First Lots on the Ridge
John W. Peckenpaugh bought the land that became West Leipsic in 1850, and county surveyor Samuel Parker laid out the first twenty lots on it soon after. John Shakely put up the first house that same year, a structure remembered for decades afterward as the old Shakely house, which did duty as a hotel and drug store. Over the next five years a small cluster of firsts followed: J. J. Lowry opened the first store and later became the village's first justice of the peace, John Dehnert set up as the first blacksmith, Joseph Faber as the first wagon maker, George Haskell as the first cooper, and Dr. Samuel Emery as the first physician. When Lowry's daughter Louisa was born in September 1852, the first white child born in the village, nobody could have guessed she would grow up to marry Dr. Emery, uniting two of the town's founding firsts. By 1882 the settlement -- by then already known as West Leipsic after an early swap of names with its larger neighbor -- was ready to incorporate, with R. Haskell as its first mayor.

48,666 days of records, 1893-02-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
