How Leipsic began

Leipsic, platted in 1857 and named for Leipzig, Germany, grew up on the Blanchard River in Van Buren Township in what had recently been Great Black Swamp country. Its 1894 John Edwards House, later converted into the town's public library, and its 1904 city hall (since destroyed) both won National Register listing. The village today draws its water, along with several neighboring systems, from the Blanchard River near Ottawa.

Platted 1857.

Where the name comes from

Leipsic is a variant spelling of Leipzig, one of the largest cities in eastern Germany, reflecting the German ancestry of many of the area's settlers.

Before the town

No Native American site or village specific to Leipsic itself is recorded. The village lies in Van Buren Township, outside the former Blanchard's Fork Ottawa Reserve that occupied the Ottawa Township area to the southwest.

Timeline

  1. — Abraham Baughman settles on a farm just east of the later Leipsic, the first settler in Van Buren Township.
  2. — Van Buren Township holds its first election at Abraham Baughman's house, twelve votes cast; the 1915 county history instead says the commissioners organised the township in 1843.
  3. — Leipsic is platted and named for Leipzig, Germany.
  4. — James E. Creighton plats Creightontown east of the Dayton & Michigan railroad, the first ground platted into lots within the later Leipsic.
  5. — The Dayton & Michigan railroad is built; J. B. Swartz, Wellington Hurd and David McClung settle on the dense woods of the site, and Swartz lays out Leipsic Station on August 29.
  6. — The Leipsic Methodist church is organised; the Lutheran and Presbyterian churches follow in 1868, the Catholic St. Mary's in 1875 and the Christian church in 1876.
  7. — The Leipsic public school is organised with Dr. J. C. McClung as principal and 34 pupils; it becomes a high school in 1880.
  8. — The Leipsic Flouring Mill is built; the Buckeye Stave Company, organised in 1886, later runs seven stave factories employing about 1,000 people and buys the Bank of Leipsic in 1887.
  9. — The Nickel Plate (New York, Chicago & St. Louis) railroad is built through Leipsic; the 1890s history gives 1882, another page 1883.
  10. — The John Edwards House is built at 305 W. Main Street; it is later converted into the village's public library.
  11. — Defiance (Main) Street is paved with brick, the first brick street pavement in Putnam County; surveyor D. W. Seitz builds it, and Prof. L. S. Lafferty founds Leipsic College in the old Methodist church.
  12. — Leipsic City Hall is built at State Route 65 and Cherry Street; it is later destroyed, though its National Register listing (1979) remains on record.
  13. — The John Edwards House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  14. — The census counts 2,236 residents in Leipsic.

Stories

A Library in a Merchant's House

The John Edwards House at 305 W. Main Street was built in 1894 as a private residence, one of the finer homes a Leipsic family could build in the years after the surrounding Black Swamp land had finally been drained and turned productive. Rather than falling to demolition as the village's needs changed, the house was converted into Leipsic's public library, a use that has kept the building both occupied and, by extension, preserved -- it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Leipsic City Hall, built a decade later in 1904 at State Route 65 and Cherry Street and listed on the Register in 1979, was not so fortunate: the building has since been destroyed, leaving only its Register listing and photographs of the empty site as the record of where Leipsic's village government once did business. The two buildings' different fates -- one repurposed and standing, one gone -- are a small, concrete illustration of how a National Register listing protects a building's history but not, by itself, the building.

A town of staves, bricks and a brick street

Leipsic sits on a rise at the southern edge of the Black Swamp, and when the Dayton & Michigan railroad came through in 1859 the site was dense woods with three families. By 1895 the county atlas could count a flouring mill built in 1872, a planing mill, a machine works making the Leipsic wind engine, a sawmill adding a trunk-slat factory in 1894, a brick yard turning out nearly a million bricks a year, a creamery, and the Buckeye Stave Company with seven factories and about 1,000 workers and a payroll near $175,000. In 1894 Main Street was paved with brick, the first brick pavement in Putnam County, built by surveyor D. W. Seitz. Church and school followed the railroads: five congregations by 1895 and a public school that had grown from 34 pupils in 1867 to 850.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
